"Today in Soap Opera History" is a collection of the most memorable, interesting and influential events in the history of scripted, serialized programs. From birthdays and anniversaries to scandals and controversies, every day this column celebrates the soap opera in American culture.

On this date in...

1938: Radio soap opera Life Can Be Beautiful premiered on CBS, starting a successful 16-year run. Life Can Be Beautiful quickly became known to radio insiders by its initials, and widely referred to as "Elsie Beebe." It was the story of Carol Conrad (Alice Reinheart, and later Teri Keane), a disadvantaged child who--still in her teens--ran into the Slightly Read Bookshop seeking shelter and a hiding place from Gyp Mendoza (Waldemar Kappel, and later Paul Stewart), the town racketeer. The kindly old book dealer, Papa David Solomon (Ralph Locke), would soon become one of the great philosophers of daytime radio. Carol became "Chichi" and was installed on a pallet in the back room as the old man's ward. Fifteen years later, she was still there. The show was billed as "an inspiring message of faith drawn from life."

1960: On Search for Tomorrow, after talking things over with Joanne (Mary Stuart), Alison (Anne Pearson) endured an uncomfortable evening with her in-laws, the Metcalfs, who came over for dinner.

1967: CBS broadcast The Edge of Night in color for the first time.

1967: Marcella Martin aired for the final time as Flo Murray on Another World. Flo had killed Danny Fargo. Ralph Oliver also aired for the last time that day as Charlie Rushinberger.

1980: On General Hospital, Alan (Stuart Damon) told Monica (Leslie Charleson) she could leave but she wasn't taking the baby. "You've never been a bargain as a wife," Alan told her, "but let's see how you do as a mother."

1983: On Ryan's Hope, Jill (Nancy Addison) felt pangs of jealousy when she saw Frank (Geoffrey Pierson) with Rae (Louise Shaffer).

1985: On Santa Barbara, Assistant District Attorney Felicia Dalton (Phylicia Rashad, then known as Phylicia Allen Ayers) questioned Ted Capwell (Todd McKee) about the death of Steve Bassett. Joel Crothers (playing attorney Jack Lee) made his final television appearance before he passed away on November 6, 1985.

1989: On As the World Turns, Paul Stenbeck (Andrew Kavovit) walked in on his father, James (Anthony Hererra), attacking Emily Stewart (Melanie Smith) and shot him three times.

1989: On Guiding Light, Phillip (Grant Aleksander) told Lillian (Tina Sloan) he thought Beth could still be alive. Lillian she angrily refused to believe him.

1992: Irving Allen Lee, who played Calvin Stoner in The Edge of Night and Evan Cooper on Ryan's Hope, passed away at age 43. He died of AIDS-related lymphoma, according to his companion, John Uehlein.

1994: Marie-Alise Recasner debuted as Lynn Burke in Days of our Lives.

1996:Dallas executive producer Leonard Katzman died at age 69.

2002: MTV aired the final episode of Undressed, which gave viewers "a peek behind closed doors at the intricacies of modern relationships."

2006: MyNetworkTV, an upstart network launched by News Corporation, launched two with nightly serials. After the moderate success of Desire and Fashion House, ratings began to decline. The second pair of soaps, Wicked Wicked Games and Watch Over Me had decent ratings but not as successful as the debut telenovelas. By the time the third batch, American Heiress and Saints and Sinners, were shown, the ratings were disastrous and the format was phased out.

2008: On Hollyoaks, while Craig Dean (Guy Burnett) made a last ditch effort to win back ex-lover, John Paul McQueen (James Sutton), Niall Rafferty (Barry Sloane) was beginning his final revenge plot against the entire McQueen family. First up, Niall would drug and kill John Paul's fiancé, Kieron Hobbs (Jake Hendriks), and in doing so, would maneuver to have the ex-priest "hear his confession" before making his murder look like a suicide, thereby leaving John Paul wracked with guilt, thinking he was responsible for Kieron's death.

It always is.” Haiduk has already started taping and is excited to see what will happen with her character. “There are really no limits on what you can do with Patty. It really depends on the mood. Is she in a good place or a bad mood? She’s very unpredictable, but she never intends to hurt anyone. In the past, she’s been manipulated by the wrong people. It will be interesting to see if that happens again.”

Peter Reckell
Days of our Lives star Peter Reckell: "I’m so proud of the show right now"
"That’s why I’m so proud of the show right now; that’s what they’re doing, giving the audience exactly what they want," says Reckell, who recently returned as Bo Brady. "I’m really proud of these new head writers for heading in that direction."

On Bo's relationship with Ciara: "I just want to say that [Vivian Jovanni] is amazing. That’s difficult, because I’m in love with Lauren [Boles], and to have her replaced, I got to admit, at first I was disappointed. But what they’ve done, the way they’ve handled the character and her growing up, was really cool. She’s a great mixture of the characters of Bo and Hope. I think the audience is really going to connect to their relationship, because we did get to spend a lot of time together, the two characters. She’ll be kind of carrying the mantle of Bo onward."

Kassie DePaiva says it's been a challenge to make Eve Donovan real
"Eve is a very challenging character," DePaiva says. "She's very damaged so it's been challenging to make her real."

General Hospital alum James Franco is teaching high school now
ranco, student of life, teacher of N.Y.U. and U.S.C. film students, guest starrer of soap operas, will next bestow his hard-won wisdom upon a lucky few high-schoolers. Friday night via Instagram, Franco alerted the young citizens of California that he’d be hosting an eight-part film class at Silicon Valley’s Palo Alto High School and encouraged them to join him. “Sign up NOW! 💥” he implored (sunburst emoji his).

The Young and the Restless and As the World Turns actress Jennifer Landon stars in I Spit on Your Grave 3: Vengeance Is Mine
Anchor Bay Entertainment will release the R.D. Braunsten-directed sequel into limited theaters on October 9, 2015. A DVD, Blu-ray, and VOD release will follow on October 20, 2015.

Jennifer Landon (ex-Gwen, ATWT; ex-Heather, Y&R), Doug McKeon and Gabriel Hogan co-star in this unforgiving, unmerciful, and uncut new chapter of one of the most notorious franchises in movie history.

ANOTHER WORLD: The Story of Steven, Rachel & Alice

The Soap Box
Vol. IV No. 7 July 1979
by Bryna Laub

(continued from Part 15)

Meanwhile, in New York, Iris Carrington, on one of her periodic visits to her son, was upset to find a beautiful and refined young woman in residence at Eliot's home. Iris was legally separated from Eliot at his request but she still hoped somehow to force a reconciliation. On her side was the fact that her doting father, industrialist Mackenzie Cory, held a contract binding Eliot's services to him for several more years and, on Iris' request, he refused to release Eliot. Implied was the threat that, should Eliot try to make the separation a divorce, his career would be finished.

Iris had for years been paying Mrs. Goddard to keep tabs on Eliot so Iris would know if he was interested in another woman and arrive in time to head off the competition. Learning Miss Talbot's references were from Bay City, Iris sent her there to learn who and what Alice really was. Calling herself Mrs. Brown, Mrs. Goddard quickly managed to learn the new nurse was Alice Frame, wife of millionaire Steven Frame, and she had disappeared suddenly without explanation several months ago.

Alice had found a good friend in Eliot and by now had confided much of her past to him. It was to help her resolve her feelings that Eliot suggested she accompany him and Dennis on a vacation trip to St. Croix. After much soul searching and with serious misgivings, Alice finally agreed.

Robert Emhardt debuted as the first Mackenzie Cory on
May 1, 1973.  He played the role for just over a year.
Iris, learning of this, hurried to Bay City where she found Alice's husband was interested in another woman and not eager to listen to her tales of Alice having an affair with Eliot. But Iris found a willing ear in Rachel who saw in this proposed trip an opportunity to bring the situation to a head.

Rachel convinced Steven they should take Jamie on a vacation to his house on St. Croix and they ultimately ran into Eliot and Alice at a local nightclub. Both Alice and Steven were shaken at the sight of each other but Alice, seeing Rachel, stiffened and refused to speak to Steven. And Steven, bittered by this further rebuff, told Rachel this was the final straw, he wanted nothing further to do with Alice. Rachel commiserated with him, making sure to mention that Alice was undoubtedly the mistress of the handsome man accompanying her.

Victoria Wydham starred as Rachel Clark.
The following day Rachel forced herself into the house Eliot was renting, and told Alice that Steven wanted a divorce so he could marry her and make a home for the three of them. Alice icily replied she knew Steven was having an affair with Rachel before she left Bay City so, as far as she was concerned, they could go on the way they were. She didn't want him back but she had no intention of ever freeing him to marry Rachel.

But the seed was sown. Rachel now began to pressure Steven to start divorce proceedings, pointing out that her own divorce had gone through and they should be married for Jamie's sake. When Steven hesitated, Rachel made it an ultimatum--Steven was eager for Jamie to know he was his real father and Rachel made that conditional upon a divorce. She would not allow Jamie to know the truth as long as his father was married to another woman. So Steven sent John Randolph to New York to ask Alice's consent for a divorce.

Alice adamantly refused to even consider it, echoing the sentiments she had expressed to Rachel in St. Croix. But Eliot, when she told him about her decision, gently drew a parallel between his situation and Steven's. Recognizing that she was cruelly tying Steven to her as Iris had bound Eliot, Alice contacted John and agreed to the divorce on the stipulation that she receive nothing from Steven, particularly his name and "her" house.

Eliot applauded her decision and now told Alice he loved her and would divorce Iris in a minute if Dennis' heart condition wasn't a factor.

Where the Heart Is
1969: Daytime soap opera Where the Heart Is, set in the fictional town of Northcross, premiered on CBS. The show, which centered on the Hathaway family, was created by Lou Scofield and Margaret DePriest, who were the original head writers. They were replaced by Pat Falken Smith and later Claire Labine and Paul Avila Mayer before CBS canceled the series in 1973, and replaced it with The Young and the Restless.

In the first episode, Kate Hathaway (Diana van der Vlis) was mourning the recent death of her tyrant father, Judge Daniel Hathaway. However, her brother, Julian Hathaway (James Mitchell), a widowed English professor, was rejoicing over the old man's death, which he had fantasized about since boyhood.

1983: On The Young and the Restless, in a truly heartbreaking scene, Paul Williams (Doug Davidson) cradled his fiancée, Cindy Lake (DeAnna Robbins) in his arms as she died. In reporting this event at the time, soap columnist Tony Rizzo wrote in Soap Opera Digest: Like actor, Joe Taylor (mob boss, Tony DiSalvo), "Deanna Robbins who played Cindy on Y&R was also signed to a contract after being brought in to play a limited role. However, when Tony's storyline ended, it also spelled the end of her storyline, which leaves Paul free to move on to other things and romances. After all, could a wholesome, All-American guy find true love and happiness with a reformed prostitute? Not too often in soapland. In the end, Cindy proved that hookers have a heart of gold, as she threw herself in front of the bullet that was intended for her one true love. Their tearful final scenes were beautiful."

The always busy Zenk is currently starring in Theatre Workshop of Nantucket’s production of "Other Desert Cities," running now until September 19.

Days of our Lives viewers saw Bo Brady's face on Tuesday.
Ken Corday happy to have Peter Reckell back as Bo Brady on Days of our Lives
“Peter Reckell is part of the fabric and history of Days of our Lives and we are thrilled to have him back," says executive producer Ken Corday. "What we think has been happening with Bo hasn’t been. It’s a huge mystery, where he is and what he’s doing. That has to be solved.”

The Bold and the Beautiful star Karla Mosley: "Diversity helps everyone"
"We can look at Misty Copeland becoming the first African American woman to be promoted to principal dancer for ABT. People are beginning to understand that diversity helps everyone," says Mosley. "It enriches our creative thinking, our marketing, and the more people you have with various life experiences the broader your scope is. As a businessperson it’s a smart decision."

"The LGBT community has been extremely supportive. People are seeing their story on TV or a story very similar to theirs. People love the fact that Rick and Maya are staying together. People say that’s not realistic or that would never really happen but in this situation we can say it does happen and that it happens everyday."

Lisa Rinna grateful for the foundation she received on Days of our Lives
"When I started, you'd have 20 to 40 pages of dialogue to memorize every single day," Rinna says. "You had to learn so fast. It was sink or swim… [It's] some of the hardest work you'll ever have to do."

The pressure was so great, in fact, that Rinna often broke down when she came home after an intense day of filming.

"I would come home and I would get in the bathtub and I would cry. I would have a really good cry," she admits. "It was all-consuming."

Though difficult to go through at the time, Rinna now looks back on her soap opera days as the training ground that honed her skill and gave her a strong foundation for the rest of her career.

"It prepared me for anything else," she says. "I really am grateful for that."

Bob Harper replacing Alison Sweeney as host of The Biggest Loser
"I'm super excited about taking the position of host on The Biggest Loser," Harper said in a press release about the news. "I've been with the show since Season 1, so I know all of the ins and outs, and let me tell you, the weigh-in room is going to be a completely different ballgame with me at the steering wheel."

FOX orders a drama pilot about the first female pitcher in pro baseball
The show is from The Neighbors and Galavant creator Dan Fogelman. The untitled project follows a young female pitcher who defies the odds to become the first woman to compete in professional baseball.

Pretty Little Liars is getting a new intro
"Everyone gets a turn to shhh,” says creator Marlene King.

Advertising on Empire will cost $500.000 per 30-second spot in Season 2
The last non-sports show to demand that much money was American Idol during its heyday.
