Steven and Alice finally married on September 24, 1971, more
than three years after they met at Walter and Lenore Curtin's
wedding reception.
ANOTHER WORLD: The Story of Steven, Rachel & Alice

The Soap Box
Vol. IV No. 7 July 1979
by Bryna Laub

(continued from Part 11)

It was the Curtins who finally helped Alice put the ghost of Rachel's interference to rest. They invited her for the evening and gently explained that Steven had financed Ted out of love for HER and for their future together. Only by making sure that Rachel had no reason to come to him for money could he put her out of their lives, and there was nothing he wouldn't do to make sure that happened. Suddenly, for the first time in a year, it was clear to Alice. The problem wasn't Rachel or even Jamie, it was herself and her attitude toward their problems.

Alice quickly called Steven and he hurried to her. Eagerly she asked his forgiveness for misjudging his motives and his actions. She explained she now understood that while Jamie was an important part of his life, Rachel could only be as important as they let her be. If she and Steve had love and trust between them, Rachel was no longer a threat.

At that moment Steven's heart brimmed with joy. He was now sure that he and Alice had weathered the storm. As he took her into his arms he told her he had a wonderful surprise for her.

Steven Frame (George Reinholt) and
Alice Matthews (Jacqueline Courtney).
That weekend Steven took Alice for a drive and they stopped near an incredibly beautiful house set so perfectly in a grove of majestic trees it seemed destined to be there. It was there, not far from the lovely house, that Steven again asked Alice to marry him, to believe in him and have trust in his ability to protect her from ever being hurt again. And she said yes, now believing with all her heart that nothing could ever weaken the strong bond of their love.

Then Steven took her by the hand and led her up the walk to the house. Alice was enchanted with it but at first had no idea that Steven had brought her there intentionally. When she finally realized he had built the house for her without even knowing if she would ever return she was overwhelmed by the depth of his devotion. As she remembered the dream house she had created during his recovery she understood that each detail, each idea, had been lovingly translated into an enduring monument to his love for her. Alice turned to Steven with the brilliant light of love shining from her eyes and softly asked if they could be married right there, on the patio of their home. Steven delighted in granting her wish, insisting only that they make that day as soon as possible.

And just three weeks later Alice and Steven, in the company of her family and their closest friends, were married in that three-sheltered spot, sharing all the traditional vows and adding some special promises they had written themselves, binding themselves to each other for the rest of their lives.

Rachel, who had loudly declared her happiness for Steven and Alice when their impending marriage had been announced, watched Alice's wedding day dawn sunny and bright. Despite her firm contention that Ted meant everything to her and her desire to mean that honestly and completely, she couldn't help but remember the love for Steven that she tried to bury deep within herself. Is it fair, she wondered? I loved him so much and we have a child together. Is that all? No. Someday, Steven. Someday...

EDITOR'S NOTE: Steven and Alice's first wedding aired on September 24, 1971. Stay tuned for Part 13 of Another World - The Story of Steven, Rachel & Alice.

The Bold and the Beautiful star Sean Kanan visits The Podcastle podcast
On his loyal fans: "I've been on four different soap operas, and they always find me. I act for me, but without the fans I would probably be doing a one-man show in somebody's loft."

On the B&B production schedule: "We have 28 production weeks, and we do 8 shows a week. There's only 5 days in the production week, so we're banking 3 shows a week."

On what it's like being a soap star: "Being on a soap opera is a lot like being a WWF star. You become very famous within a very specific microcosm."

The Young and the Restless alums Angell Conwell and Redaric Williams writing together
"I’m in the process of writing and producing as we speak. I feel it’s a natural part of evolving as an actor. I’m writing a project now with my former Young and The Restless co-star Redaric Williams." Hollywood is a town where actors are constantly concerned about the next audition, the next role, and the next opportunity. Conwell remains grounded by not allowing herself to look too far ahead, "I just [want] to see myself getting better with every day."

Scott McKinsey is now directing at Days of our Lives
McKinsey won six Daytime Emmys for his directing work at General Hospital over the past two decades.

2015 AfterEllen Hot 100 list revealed
Scandal star Kerry Washington kicks off the list at No. 100. Former As the World Turns star Julianne comes in at No. 87. Elsewhere on the list, The Fosters' Sherri Saum is No. 82, while Guiding Light alum Crystal Chappell is No. 57.

Executive Producer Gareth Phillips previews what's head on Irish soap opera Red Rock
With a huge body of work in the UK including dramas such as Coronation Street, Hollyoaks and Cold Blood, Phillips came to Ireland initially to work on Fair City as a consultant. Then Red Rock came knocking.
"We are really building on the foundations that have been put in place earlier in the year. It’s important to remember that a lot of episodes going on the screen were actually shot some time ago – I think all our episodes up to Christmas and New Year have been shot. What I think is right at the heart of Red Rock will be seen again in the new season – that you never know what is going to happen and we are not afraid to take very big risks. We want the audience to feel like the show is a thrill ride. The show is a police procedural drama at heart after all so we want it so that the audience can never predict what is going to happen next."

Anita Gillette
Fresh from his one-man show at the iconic Sydney Opera House, Nelson Aspen (ex-Albert, Search for Tomorrow) is returning for three performances (October 2, 9 and 16 at 7 p.m.), accompanied by his original music director, Gerry Dieffenbach. Aspen has promised surprises at all three shows and has now revealed the first guest: Broadway star Anita Gillette ((ex-Franki, The Edge of Night; ex-Wilma, Search for Tomorrow) will join the first show on October 2.

"Anita is a living showbiz legend and I can't wait to have her be a part of my opening night at Don't Tell Mama," Aspen tells We Love Soaps. "She starred in the first Broadway musical I ever saw, 'They're Playing our Song,' and I grew up watching her on Quincy, Password and Match Game. She can do it all! We worked together briefly in the mid '80s on Search for Tomorrow and then she became a bona fide movie star with Moonstruck. We reunited a few years on a Red Carpet for 30 Rock (she played Tina Fey's mother) and became NYC neighbors...truly full circle. Anita's unique talent, energy and charm continue to endear her to audiences of all ages."

ANOTHER WORLD: The Story of Steven, Rachel & Alice

The Soap Box
Vol. IV No. 7 July 1979
by Bryna Laub

(continued from Part 12)

Alice and Steven Frame's honeymoon on the island of St. Croix in the Caribbean had ended, but their happiness was undiminished when they returned to Bay City to begin their life together in the beautiful country home Steven had built for her. She had resigned her job as a nurse at Bay City Hospital and was fully enjoying her new role as a housewife and the anticipation of motherhood ahead for her.

But one tragic event marred their happiness. Shortly before Alice's brother was to marry Cindy Clark, Cindy became ill. Russ was heartbroken when her doctors broke the news that her illness was terminal. Russ and his family chose to hide the truth from Cindy and, under the impression she would soon recover, she married Russ in the hospital chapel only hours before she died.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Cindy and Russ married on the September 5, 1972 episode. Robin Strasser left Another World December 10, 1971, and was replaced by Margie Impert from December 27, 1971 - February 15, 1972. With Impert not working out, executive producer Paul Rauch talked Strasser into returning as Rachel (February 17, 1972 - June 29, 1972) until a permanent replacement could be found. Victoria Wyndham debuted as the third (and final) Rachel on July 21, 1972, and played the role until the show's very last scene on June 25, 1999.

Cindy's brother, Ted, now married to Rachel, was shattered by his sister's death. He began to believe her death was somehow punishment for concealing the fact that it was he who had robbed Russ's clinic of drugs several months before and had injured Russ seriously in the attempt. Unable to live with this burden of guilt, he made a full confession to Russ and the authorities and received a reduced sentence of six months in the state prison.

It fell to Rachel to run their new restaurant, The Fireside Inn. Without experience she would have failed but her father, Gerald Davis, had recently lost his Riverboat Restaurant in a fire and he came to Bay City to help her. Rachel, still hoping her father might someday love her as she loved the image of him, chose to interpret his stepping into the breach as a gesture of fatherly love rather the self-serving opportunity it really was.

Rachel had tried to accept Steven's marriage to Alice as the closing of a door in her life and made a great effort to fill her life with Ted and Jamie, the son she had with Steven while she was married to Russ. But with Ted in jail her restlessness increased and when she learned Alice was expecting Steven's baby, all the old resentment returned.

When Ted returned from prison he mentioned he'd been thinking about adopting Jamie so they would really be a family. This gave Rachel the opportunity she'd been waiting for. Her agreement with Steven, made before his marriage to Alice, allowed him to visit Jamie weekly but forbade Rachel from being present. This made Alice more comfortable with the arrangement.

Rachel now forced a meeting with Steven and told him of Ted's plans. As she'd foreseen, he disliked the idea of Ted supplanting him entirely in his son's life--it was hard enough the boy called Ted "daddy" and he, Steven, was "Uncle Steve". Rachel quickly assured Steven that she, too, was against Ted's adoption plan but added that Steven himself had given Ted all the ammunition to have the courts rule in Ted's favor.

George Reinholt as Steven Frame with Victoria
Wydham as Rachel Clark.
A father is a person who takes an active role in his child's development, she explained, and Steve had relinquished this role to Ted. Only if she could honestly tell the courts that she and Steven met regularly to discuss the boy's progress and make plans for his future could he really be considered a father. Steven reluctantly agreed with her logic but knew instinctively it would upset Alice terribly. So he agreed to the meetings but kept them a secret from his wife.

One sunny day Rachel had come up with another topic for discussion and persuaded Steven to let her accompany him and Jamie on a planned picnic in the country. Jamie was bitten by a rattlesnake and they rushed him to Bay City Hospital's emergency room. Alice, on duty that day, walked by and overheard enough to realized the three of them had been together, and it wasn't the first time.

To Alice this was a complete break of trust, just like the things that had happened before her marriage. She moved back into her parents' house and once more refused to see Steven. But this time her own needs and desires overcame her pride. She loved Steven, missed him terribly, and so she went home. In gratitude for her forgiveness, Steven renegotiated his agreement with Rachel. He would go back to the original plan of seeing Jamie alone, but added a condition that no attempt by Ted to adopt Jamie would be made.

Ted agreed to Steven's proviso but made it clear to Rachel that their marriage wasn't working the way it had months ago. Rachel's explanation of this was Ted's prison term. She had been thrust into the position of running the restaurant and being the breadwinner and now she wasn't willing to relinquish all the reins and let Ted run their lives completely. Ted couldn't accept this and began to see that as long as they lived in Bay City, the past would always come between Rachel and himself.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Robin Strasser's final exit from Another World (June 29, 1972) involved Rachel leaving Bay City for a while, feeling pulled in different directions by Ted and Jamie following Jamie's snake bit. Stay tuned for Part 14 of Another World - The Story of Steven, Rachel & Alice.

Soap Opera Writers Being Bullied Into Signing Waivers Cutting Pay and Scripts?

$
0
0
According to a story on Deadline.com, more and more soap opera writers are being “bullied” by producers into requesting waivers from the WGA to take pay cuts. Deadline sites guild sources, one of whom described it as a “particularly insidious” problem that’s “cropping up regularly on daytime TV.” The guild has been powerless to do anything about it because the writers are afraid that they’ll lose their jobs if they speak up.

WGA sources say that veteran CBS soaps The Bold and the Beautiful and The Young and the Restless are the ones the guild has received the most complaints about. The guild’s contract requires a show’s soap writers to be given one assignment a week, but writers can ask for a waiver to cut back on the workload if they have a legitimate reason, such as illness or a family emergency.

Some producers allegedly have been gaming the system by bullying less-favored writers into asking the guild for waivers to reduce their assignments by one or more a month, even though they actually want to continue working full time. Sources say that some writers have been forced to give up a script or two a month so that an actor or a line producer can write a show or so a new writer can be brought in at no extra cost.

The contract language governing these waivers was meant to protect writers by mandating that the request come from the writer. If it does, the contract requires the guild to grant the waiver, but if the guild determines that it originated from the company, it can refuse. The guild, however, has yet to deny such a waiver requested by a soap writer.

Guild records show that from June 2014 through June 2015, the guild granted 23 such waivers to soap writers – 16 on CBS’ The Bold and the Beautiful, six to writers on the network’s The Young and the Restless, and one to a writer on NBC’s Days of our Lives. In the previous year, writers on B&B requested another 11 waivers, and Y&R writers asked for two.

“The number of waiver requests have multiplied over the last decade,” said Karen Harris, a WGA board member and former chair of the guild’s Daytime Writers Committee who sits on the guild’s Waiver Committee. “Hardly a month goes by when we don’t have a waiver request or two.”

Harris said that she has seen soap writers’ personal service agreements that “memorialize a reduced guarantee along with the condition that the writer seek a waiver every 13 weeks.” This, she believes, “demonstrates coercion on the part of the company and establishes that the waiver requests are often not truly ‘initiated’ by the writers as required by the MBA.”

We Love Soaps reached out to The Bold and the Beautiful and The Young and the Restless reps but has yet to receive a reply. The Deadline story gives one perspective but obviously there are many more.

ANOTHER WORLD: The Story of Steven, Rachel & Alice

The Soap Box
Vol. IV No. 7 July 1979
by Bryna Laub

(continued from Part 13)

One day Rachel called Steven at home, explaining a situation had arisen which required a parental judgment. Steven left Alice doing spring cleaning, saying only a business matter required his attention. While he was with Rachel, deciding whether Jamie should attend public or private school in September, Alice fell from a step stool while arranging a close and, in the hospital a few hours later, she lost the baby.

After the miscarriage her doctor warned her not to attempt another pregnancy for at least a year. This frightened Alice into suspecting she might never be able to have another child and she became depressed. Unaware of this underlying cause, Alice's doctor felt she was morbidly dwelling on her loss and she had too much time on her hands. He prescribed a return to work as a cure so she went back to nursing at the hospital.

As wary as Steven had previously been to tell Alice about his meetings with Rachel, he realized now they would be even more upsetting to her. So he continued to consult with Rachel in secret.

Rachel had no choice but to accept the new rules. However, when she learned Steven had been taking Jamie to his house, and that the boy was becoming friends with Alice, she was furious. Unable to to intrude on those weekly visits herself, she did the next best thing--she cancelled Steven's visits, knowing this would provoke Steven into demanding a discussion.

When Rachel finally returned Steven's angry calls, she refused, at Gerald's prompting, to discuss the situation over the phone. Reluctantly he agreed to see her at his office apartment at the close of the business day.

Gerald, who had been watching Rachel's battle of wills with great interest, had decided that if Rachel could somehow get Alice out of the picture and marry Steven, he, as her father, might benefit financially from Steven's great wealth. He knew that Alice had left Steven when she learned he'd been seeing Rachel and realized this was the way to get rid of her. He called the hospital right after Rachel left to meet Steven and left an anonymous message that Mrs. Frame was to meet her husband at his office apartment right after work.

Alice stepped off the elevator to overhear Rachel reminiscing to Steven about the wonderful times the three of them had had together. As Alice stood motionless in the doorway Rachel went on to say she never felt as close to him as she did when they were together the day Alice lost her baby.

In total shock, Alice turned and ran back into the elevator. The doors closed before she could hear Steven bitterly reply that if she hadn't coerced him into meeting her, he and Alice would have their baby now. He bitingly turned aside her attempts to persuade him to once again include her in his visits to Jamie and told her she was still out for what she wanted and what she could get. Concluding that if she wasn't satisfied with their agreement she could see a lawyer, Steven showed her out.

He went straight home, determined to tell Alice of this meeting to prevent anymore misunderstandings and recriminations but, when he arrived, she was gone.

To Steven's horror and amazement, Jim and Mary received a phone call from Alice who told them her marriage was a mistake and that Steven had been betraying her all along. She refused to even let them know where she was. Jim told Steven he could see Steven didn't know what this all meant and he believed he had done nothing, but Mary once more held Steven responsible.

Rachel, still unaware of the reason behind Alice's leaving, sensed that a chance was at hand but knew she had to proceed slowly. She briefly commiserated with Steven over Alice's sudden disappearance and made Jamie available to him whenever he wanted to see the boy. His son was his only consolation right now.

When Ted announced to Rachel he had decided to accept a job offer in Chicago and build a brand new life for the three of them away from Bay City, Rachel adamantly refused, saying she couldn't take Jamie away from his father right now and she didn't choose to move away either. Ted made it an ultimatum and Rachel unconcernedly let him move to Chicago alone. Gerald agreed to stay on at The Fireside Inn.

GLAAD is changing how it tracks LGBT inclusivity on TV
GLAAD is publishing an extensive report on the state of LGBT representation on television this morning. It’s become a major part of the organization’s media advocacy over the last decade — and after this year, it’s being replaced.

"Over the years, we’ve seen a remarkable increase in LGBT representation on most of the TV networks we track in our report," says Matt Kane, GLAAD’s programs director for entertainment media. "We may have the numbers, but [networks] still aren’t quite representing the LGBT community in a way that’s accurate… There are still people who are starved for representation in popular culture." Having achieved some progress on a quantitative level, GLAAD is focusing its efforts on broadening the kinds of LGBT people depicted on TV, namely people of color and transgender people.

Linda Gray Shares Her Story in "The Road to Happiness Is Always Under Construction" Out September 8

When Dallas icon Linda Gray was 20 years old, a magazine editor coldly rejected her as a model, writing that, perhaps one day, “you might shape into something.” Since then, Linda has been evolving and growing, and has shaped into a role model for women of every age in her grace, beauty, generosity, and wisdom. She’s been through more pain and tragedy than her longtime fans realize, having suffered paralyzing polio as a child, growing up with an alcoholic mother, landing in a emotionally abusive marriage at twenty-two and living by her husband’s rules for sixteen years before she openly rebelled against him to take an acting class. At thirty-eight, Linda got her big break, as Larry Hagman’s wife on Dallas. With fame came a bitter, public divorce, trouble at home with her two kids, and the loss of her beloved sister to breast cancer. Linda got through it all—the challenges of sexism in Hollywood and the pressures of being a single working mom—with a relentlessly positive attitude that kept her cruising, with a few speed bumps, to the place of serenity she thrives in now.

To celebrate her 75th birthday, Linda is opening up about her life for the first time. In her new book, "The Road to Happiness Is Always Under Construction," she tells deeply personal stories with wit, humor, and candor, and reveals how she’s learned to love every day as the blessing it is and to treat herself with the kindness she bestows on friends and strangers alike. Along with wisdom, Linda has accumulated a lot of practical tips about maintaining a healthy lifestyle—how to strengthen and detoxify your body, liberate your mind, and uplift your soul—and shares them as well. Her message to “give, love, and shine, baby, shine” will fill anyone with inspiration to live life to the fullest, and never stop pursuing honesty and joy.

Linda Gray is an award-winning actress, an accomplished director, a former United Nations Ambassador, and one of the world’s most recognized and admired stars. Her portrayal of Sue Ellen Ewing, in the original TV series Dallas, brought her international fame and critical acclaim. The role also earned her an Emmy nomination for Best Actress, numerous international awards, and she was voted ‘Woman of the Year’ by The Hollywood Radio & Television Society. After eleven years as the #1 show on television, Dallas returned on TNT and ran for three seasons. She has appeared in numerous TV movies and series such as Melrose Place and The Bold and the Beautiful, as well as starring in theater productions on Broadway and in London's West End. On Monday she guest-starred on CW's Significant Mother. Last week, she appeared in the premiere of web drama Winterthorne.

"The Road to Happiness Is Always Under Construction" will be released on September 8, 2015. Gray will be appearing on Hallmark Channel's Home & Family on Thursday, September 10 to discuss the book.

In case you missed it, watch the Winterthorne series premiere below feature Linda Gray's fabulous guest appearance.

ANOTHER WORLD: The Story of Steven, Rachel & Alice

The Soap Box
Vol. IV No. 7 July 1979
by Bryna Laub

(continued from Part 14)

Alice had gone to New York and spent several days alone in a small hotel for women, taking meals in her room and sinking deeper and deeper into a kaleidoscope of memories of Steven, dwelling on those last awful moments in his apartment when her world fell apart. He had betrayed her so horribly that their whole life together had become a lie. Finally, however, she realized what was happening to her and knew she had to find something to fill her thoughts and her time before she had withdrawn completely from living.

She applied for a position as a nurse/governess in the household of international journalist Eliot Carrington. Eliot's son Dennis was a semi-invalid suffering from a congenital heart condition. Since Eliot was separated from his socialite wife Iris, Dennis was in the care of Eliot's housekeeper, Mrs. Louise Goddard, and led a lonely life with visits from his tutor, his only relief from boredom.

As the weeks went by, Steven's anguish at losing Alice began to turn to bitterness. After all, he had done nothing wrong and she had abandoned him out of the blue, without even an explanation. When Jim apologetically contacted Steven to report that Alice wanted all her thing out of the house and sent to her, it was the last straw. Steven went to The Fireside Inn and began to get drunk. Gerald spoke to him just long enough to realize Steven had hit bottom and quickly called Rachel to come back to the restaurant.

George Reinholt as Steven Frame and Victoria
Wyndham as Rachel Clark.
Rachel managed to get Steven back to the apartment and then sat with him as he poured out all his bitterness and misery. He accused Alice of expecting him to sit and wait forever over a betrayal that never happened. Finally he told Rachel that he never should have married Alice, it was all a big mistake.

Sensing his needs and his vulnerability Rachel now offered herself to him to help him forget Alice. And to soothe his wounds Steven once again took Rachel upstairs to his bedroom.

In the morning Rachel found the response she'd hope for years ago on the morning after Jamie was conceived. Steve was eager to see her again, to make love to her again, and to let her fill the emptiness in his life. And now when she said she understood him, he replied that she did, she was the only one who understood him.

Rachel and Steven were together constantly from that night on. Steven now confided in Rachel that a man can love and need two women at the same time. Alice represented the unattainable dream to him and the very fact that she was all those things made him unable to be himself with her. There were parts of him he could never show her because she could have never understood them. But she, Rachel, he continued, also came from the wrong side of the tracks and fought for everything she had. With her he could be himself, he could show the bad side as well as the good. And Rachel knew this deepened the bond between them, and she asked Ted for a divorce.

The only flaw in her happiness was Gerald's unexpected announcement that he was leaving town to follow up a business deal in San Francisco. Now realizing he only stayed this long for his own convenience, Rachel asked him why he didn't care for her as a father should. He replied he did, that's why he got Steven for her. As Gerald proudly explained how he had gotten rid of Alice, Rachel realized with growing horror that if Steven ever found out about this, he would never believe she wasn't part of the scheme and she would lose him forever.

An evening of fun, food and bowling with some of your favorite child stars at the famous Lucky Strike Live at Hollywood & Highland offered an impressive silent auction (put together by the events organizer, Scott Schwartz) with proceeds going to the charity.

Since before Mickey Rooney made his silent screen debut in 1926 or Baby Rose Marie (now Rose Marie) first made her appearance in 1929 on stage in NY or even Shirley Temple dawned her blond ringlets for the first time in 1932, the debate over child actors and their safety has been an issue of concern in the industry. A subject brought to the publics attention when Jackie Coogan, who began his career in 1917 and became a fan favorite as The Kidd opposite Charlie Chaplin, took his parents to court for the $4 million he had earned during his childhood, to discover it had been spent (Although he was eventually awarded $126,000). The result was that the CA legislature passed the Child Actors Bill, also known as the Coogan Act.

However, this only dealt with one small issue surrounding the often mind boggling scenarios that young performers face. Situations that, if not dealt with, have all too many times resulted in physical abuse, sexual harassment, drug use and even death.

To that end, “A Minor Consideration” (aminorconsideration.org), the non-profit, tax exempt, 501 (c)(3) organization founded by actor Paul Petersen, (“The Donna Reed Show”) has been dedicated to improving the lives and working conditions of child performers. They have successfully changed laws regarding child actors' working hours, benefits, and trust fund protections. In addition, they have made themselves available and offered guidance to all child performers past, present and future, in any type of crisis, personal or professional.

"No one understands the experience of being a child performer like an adult who worked as a child actor," said Kami Cotler (Elizabeth, The Waltons). "We are uniquely positioned to advocate for better safeguards and to educate parents so they can protect their children. When we come together to support 'A Minor Consideration,' it's because we want to equip young people with the skills and information they need to navigate the entertainment industry so their experience is safe and even wonderful."

"What an uplifting, inspiring event!" added Alison Arngrim (Nellie, Little House on the Prairie). "To see all of my lifelong friends, our gang of grown up child actors, together with the new generation of child performers, standing together to make the industry a better place for children. And all of us just laughing, bowling and having a blast!"

“I'm so happy I could be part of A Minor Consideration's first Guiding Stars Gala. What a wonderful, fun evening with former child actors and current child actors supporting a cause near and dear to our hearts.” - Erin Murphy (Tabitha, Bewitched), who reunited with TV brother, David Bloch-Mandel (Adam, Bewitched) for the event.

“It's always amazing to get together with other folks who acted as children. We share experiences that people outside of us can't always understand. It's why we are so eager to support AMC. We know how amazing acting as a kid can be, but we also know that without protection and understanding of our government, the industry and families, it can be a really dangerous. We celebrate our experiences with each other, and we also have cautionary tales to share.” - Kami Cotler

"Last nights event was the vision the old guard of AMC had 25 years ago. How wonderful to see it happen, current child actors mingling with former child actors. A Very gratifying for me to see that become a reality." - Jeanne Russell (Margaret, Dennis the Menace)

"I could not have asked for more as the first-ever fund-raiser for AMC came to an end last night. The newer, younger generation of former kid stars put on a whale of an event...and managed to surprise me with an honor that means the world to me. Little did they know that THEY are my "Lifetime Achievement." AMC is certain to continue in the hands of Scotty and the Gang." - Paul Petersen (Jeff, The Donna Reed Show)

"Several of us were pioneers of sorts helping to usher in the era of color television. Technology has made extraordinary advances since then, but unfortunately the system has made far too little progress to protect child performers. In many respects, we're still facing the very same destructive practices that harmed many child actors of our generation. Last night's event marked a milestone for our group, A Minor Consideration. I'm thrilled that so many of us are linking up with the current group of young performers, their parents, guardians and managers to better position these kids for a lifetime of success; whether their futures are in front of the camera or not. I applaud Paul Peterson and am grateful for his efforts over the past twenty-five years to raise awareness of the abuses in the system and to help those struggling. I'm now excited that I can be a part of this new drive to help make the landscape a safer one for current and future young artists. My own post-acting career has included professional experience as a financial adviser, broadcast journalist and real estate broker. I've developed some valuable life and professional expertise that I'm more than willing to share and we now have a forum in which to do so. My colleagues in the group feel the same way and I'm confident we're going to make some positive things happen." - Randal Whipple (Randy, My Mother the Car)

"A Minor Consideration's 1st Guilding Star Gala was a smashing success. About 60 former and current child stars were joined by almost 100 others to not only raise funds for our wonderful charity but enjoy a night of bowling and great food at Lucky Strike Live Hollywood. We can't be any more happy and thankful for all those that attended and we can't wait for next's year's gala!" - Scott Schwartz (Flick, A Christmas Story)

A Minor Consideration's aim was much narrower in the early days…to aggressively reach out to those former child stars they knew to be in trouble. In years past, the Industry and the Screen Actors Guild had not been very helpful, but in January of 1991 there was a great sea-change. The news was simply too compelling to ignore, and entities like The Actors Fund, the Motion Picture Health Fund, Permanent Charities…and most importantly…Screen Actors Guild became welcome partners in an effort to help youngsters touched by early Fame and now grown old to put their lives in order.

A Minor Consideration works much like A.A., but with a significant difference; they do not pretend to be “anonymous.” There is a long history of difficulty in the curious world of Young Performers, much of it distasteful, and by sharing their experiences with each other and providing financial and emotional support, they encourage their “classmates” to put their past behind them and create a solid future. Former kid stars are automatic members, whether they like it or not … and some do not.

Over the years their mission has grown significantly. They support an aggressive educational program, both public and private to share their personal knowledge of the way things really work in the world of juvenile Hollywood. They are a clear-eyed bunch, and they do not put up with propaganda and distortions that have so colored the actual experience. They also support a legislative program to bring order out of chaos (see “Kids and the Law”), seeking to make Industry child labor laws uniform throughout the nations and to make the Coogan Law a part of every kid actor’s work life. They want money saved for the kids from Day One and Dollar One.

Their greatest triumph was in taking over the Young Performers Committee at Screen Actors Guild which had been moribund for almost twenty years, packed as it was with Managers, Agents, and Stage Parents. Simply put, they eased them out by showing up en mass, former kid stars all, and forcing their way into the game. Former kid star and former President of SAG, Barry Gordon, made that possible by appointing them to the Committee. Since that time their progress has been incredible by any measure, as the recent National Conference on Yung Performers proved. The $110,000 grant from the Industry Advancement Cooperative Fund to hold their Conference is dramatic proof of their progress.
