On When Calls the Heart’s season three debut, “Troubled Hearts,” Jack (Daniel Lissing) and Elizabeth (Erin Krakow) struggle to find time alone together even as both of them plot to make a more permanent home in Hope Valley. Meanwhile, Abigail (Lori Loughlin) is upset when Gowen (Martin Cummins) schemes to sell his share of her café to an even more demanding business partner before she receives some unexpected kindness from an old friend. And as Elizabeth excitedly surprises Jack with a row house of her very own she vows to fix it up without his help. Meanwhile, Cody (Carter Ryan Evancic) isn’t taking school seriously when he blows off an assignment and Elizabeth worries Abigail is being over-protective of him, causing some tension between them. Then, as the death of one of Hope Valley’s own becomes personal for Bill Avery (Jack Wagner), Frank (Mark Humphrey) nervously feels his past closing in when Jesse (Aren Buchholz) demands the pastor reunite with a dangerous gang of outlaws who threaten all of Hope Valley. Sensing Frank is in trouble, and realizing she cares about him more than ever before, Abigail confronts the pastor, only to discover an alarming revelation about the man she thought she knew.

Fans were outraged (at least 2,500 protest letters) leading to Teal Ames (Sara) and John Larkin (Mike) doing an on-camera appeal to viewers the next day assuring them that the actress was fine and just wanted to leave the show.

"We could have done the usual thing--sent Sara away on a long trip (at least six weeks), and had another actress pick up the part," the ad agency for EDGE said at the time. "But this would not have been satisfactory. We decided to make it quick and clean, not one of those 17-week illnesses."

1977: On Another World, Clarice insisted she was not interested in Jeff or Burt because Cory came first in her life.

1980: On The Edge of Night, Elliot Dorn (Lee Godart) was forced to verify his alibi during Draper's trial.

Diversity Study Shows Prevalence of Straight White Men in Power

Ahead of entertainment’s most exclusive and glamorous night of the year, The Oscars, a new study demonstrates just how exclusive film and television can be when it comes to women, people of color and the LGBT community. The results reveal that the prequel to #OscarsSoWhite is #HollywoodSoWhite.

The Comprehensive Annenberg Report on Diversity (CARD) is the first of its kind — an exhaustive analysis and ranking of film, television and digital streaming services that catalogues speaking characters, people behind the camera, CEOs and executives.

Authored by professor Stacy L. Smith and released by the Media, Diversity & Social Change (MDSC) Initiative at USC’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, the analysis found that only 28.3% of all speaking characters across 414 films, television and digital episodes in 2014-15 were from underrepresented racial/ethnic groups. This is 9.6% below the U.S. population norm of 37.9%. One-third (33.5%) of speaking characters were female. Behind the camera, a mere 15.2% of all directors and 28.9% of writers across film and every episode of television and digital series were female. Less than one-quarter (22.6%) of series creators were women across broadcast, cable and streaming content.

“This is no mere diversity problem. This is an inclusion crisis,” said Smith, Founding Director of the MDSC Initiative. “Over half of the content we examined features no Asian or Asian-American characters, and over 20% featured no African-American characters. It is clear that the ecosystem of entertainment is exclusionary.”

The report examined 109 films released by major studios and their art-house divisions in 2014. Additionally, 305 television and digital series across 31 networks and streaming services were analyzed. Smith and her team evaluated over 11,000 speaking characters for gender, racial and ethnic representation, and LGBT status. Additionally, in excess of 10,000 directors, writers, and show creators, along with more than 1,500 executives at the different media companies studied were evaluated based on gender.

None of the six film distributors examined received a passing grade on the Inclusion Index. Of the 30 tests conducted, 24 or 80% yielded a Not Inclusive ranking. On a standard academic scale where 100% equals a perfect score, no film distributor earned a final inclusion grade above 25% across all tests.

The Inclusion Index for television and digital content revealed places for improvement and a few bright spots. Of the 50 tests conducted, seven Fully Inclusive and nine Largely Inclusive scores were awarded across the 10 companies evaluated on TV/digital content. The Walt Disney Company and The CW Network were the strongest performers in television, while for streaming content, Hulu and Amazon tied.

The report also assessed the executive ranks of the 10 companies. Roughly one-fifth of all chief executives, corporate boards, and executive management teams were comprised of women. Near gender parity was reached in television at the Executive Vice President level. Across film, television, and digital divisions, women were 46.7% of all Senior Vice President-level positions.

The report is the latest from the Media, Diversity, & Social Change Initiative. Located at the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, this is the first signature study of its Institute for Diversity and Empowerment, a research center examining inclusivity across media industries. IDEA’s goal is to make positive, long-lasting change and facilitate civic engagement.

As the new season unfolds, Randal continues to exact his revenge; Alex endures the wrath of her racist father and the custody of her baby is questioned; and after keeping a deep secret for years, Lushion (Charles "Malik" Whitfield) makes a starting revelation to Natalie (April Parker Jones). Back in 2013, We Love Soaps partnered with DramaFever Latino to make international series more readily available to our readers. On Tuesday, Warner Bros. announced it has signed an agreement to acquire DramaFever, the parent U.S.-based company that operates subscription and on-demand video services, including its flagship DramaFever channel, which offers hundreds of Korean television and film dramas, as well as programming from other countries, to subscribers in the U.S. and around the world.

DramaFever joins Time Warner’s company-wide efforts to reach audiences directly, including the recent acquisition of iStreamPlanet and the launch of SVOD services with HBO NOW in the U.S., and, in partnership with Tencent, Hollywood VIP in China. DramaFever has a strong and growing subscriber base of diverse millennials and plurals that fits well with the company’s plans to enhance its relationship with that audience.

DramaFever’s experience in creating and running SVOD services targeted at niche audiences, including for third-parties, brings critical expertise, which will be vital to Warner Bros. as it explores various OTT scenarios and establishes more direct connections with its audiences.

“This is a great fit for Warner Bros.,” said Craig Hunegs, President, Business and Strategy, Warner Bros. Television Group. “With Warner Bros.’ resources, we will rapidly enhance and grow the DramaFever channel. As importantly, we are bringing to Warner Bros. a great and talented team, led by Seung Bak and Suk Park, that will move quickly with our own distribution and creative teams to create and build more OTT services.” DramaFever’s co-founders Bak and Park will continue to oversee the company and report to Hunegs.

“Warner Bros. is truly the ideal home for us,” said Seung Bak, co-founder and CEO, DramaFever. “Combining our deep media sensibilities and experience in developing online video destinations with Warner’s vast library and production expertise will provide an unlimited number of opportunities to create the next generation of OTT services and Internet TV brands.”

DramaFever, while wholly owned by Warner Bros., will continue to operate under that consumer-facing brand and be based in New York.

DramaFever was launched in 2009 with 10 Korean drama series. The service continues to expand rapidly and has become the leading online destination for the best TV shows and movies from around the world. Today, DramaFever offers hundreds of series, variety shows, films and kids programs, in multiple languages, and is available in more than 20 countries globally and growing.

Warner Bros. is acquiring DramaFever from SoftBank. The deal is expected to close in the second quarter of 2016.
