Jason Thompson is headed to Y&R.
Jason Thompson, who recently taped his final episodes as Dr. Patrick Drake on ABC soap opera General Hospital, has already booked his next gig. As rumored, Thompson has signed on to the play Billy Abbott on the CBS daytime drama The Young and the Restless.

According to EW.com, the five-time Emmy-nominated Thompson will begin airing on Y&R in January. He will replace Burgess Jenkins, who recently revealed he was exiting daytime's the top-rated drama.

“I feel so lucky to have the opportunity to work with Jason again,” said executive producer Jill Farren Phelps, who previously served as an EP on General Hospital. “He’s an exceptional actor and a wonderful human being. He will bring so much to the character and we’re thrilled to welcome him to The Young and Restless family.”

“Jason Thompson is an incredibly gifted actor and we are thrilled to welcome him,” added CBS’ head of daytime Angelica McDaniel. “Playing the pivotal role of Billy Abbott, Jason joins the talented cast of The Young and the Restless as the show celebrates an unprecedented 27 consecutive years as daytime’s No. 1 drama.”

"I have made the difficult decision to bid farewell to a character I've loved playing for over 10 years,"Thompson wrote on Instagram in October. "It was not an easy decision but I feel like it's time to hang up Dr. Patrick Drake's white coat and scrubs. I want to thank Frank Valentini, Vicki Dummer and Paul Lee for their support and appreciate their understanding. To everyone at ABC, the General Hospital crew, producers, writers, directors, my beloved cast mates and those in my home away from home, the make-up room, I can't possibly begin to tell you what you mean to me."

What do you think of this casting move? Is Thompson perfect for Billy? Totally wrong? Not sure? Weigh in below in our Comments section.

'Days of our Lives' Alum Lisa Rinna: "I Hated Robert Kelker-Kelly"

Lisa Rinna doesn't mince words about her former co-star.
In a new behind-the-scenes video released by Bravo, Real Housewives of Beverly Hills stars Eileen Davidson and Lisa Rinna talk share "secrets" from the world of soaps, including sometimes not getting along with co-stars. While Davidson was more tactful about her relationship on The Young and the Restless (where she has played Ashley Abbott on and off since 1982), Rinna came right out and said she hated former Days of our Lives co-star Robert Kelker-Kelly (she played Billie Reed opposite his Bo Brady).

"I hated Robert Kelker-Kelly," Rinna said. "Hated him with a passion. He hated me with a passion. We were a volatile combination, and it looked like love and sexual chemistry on camera. That was some darn good acting right there."

"Today in Soap Opera History" is a collection of the most memorable, interesting and influential events in the history of scripted, serialized programs. From birthdays and anniversaries to scandals and controversies, every day this column celebrates the soap opera in American culture.

On this date in...

1933: After its August 14 debut on local station WLW in Cincinnati, radio soap opera Ma Perkins graduated to the NBC Red network in the 3 p.m. ET timeslot. The show was produced by Frank and Anne Hummert, the prolific team responsible for numerous radio dramas including Just Plain Bill, Backstage Wife and Young Widder Brown.

In his New Yorker essay “O Pioneers!,” James Thurber discussed how the Hummerts recognized the potential that the serials that aired in the evenings would have if they were broadcast during the day instead. This simple move acknowledged that women at home were the primary decision makers when it came to purchasing, and rightly recognized that a women’s household routine might be supplemented with narrative escapism. Radio historian and biographer Jim Cox noted that the pair did even more: they “intended to seize the housewives’ attention and alter the pattern of their daily existence.” For sponsors and the female audience, it proved a match made in heaven.

The First Hundred Years
1950:The First Hundred Years premiered on CBS. It was the first show on television to use the new invention known as a teleprompter. Pictured to the right are two stars of the early TV soap, Nana Bryant (Mrs. Martin) and Olive Stacey (Connie Martin Thayer). The show was replaced in 1952 by a TV version of radio soap THE The Guiding Light.

1974: On Another World, Ada McGowan (Constance Ford) told her brother, Sam Lucas, (Jordan Charney), she wasn't sure her daughter, Rachel, would ever get over Steve Frame.

1979: On As the World Turns, Marcia Campball (Cynthia Bostick) began to wake up after her fall down the stairs.

1981:Falcon Crest premiered on CBS. The show's original cast included Jane Wyman, Robert Foxworth, Lorenzo Lamas, Billy R. Moses, Jamie Rose, Abby Dalton and Susan Sullivan. Dallas moved to the Friday 9 p.m. ET timeslot (one hour earlier) to provide a strong lead-in for the new primetime soap.

1986: Shannon Tweed aired for the final time as Savannah Wilder in Days of our Lives.

1995: On Another World, Justine Duvalier (Victoria Wyndham) fumed when Grant Harrison (Mark Pinter) rescued Vicky (Jensen Buchanan), Steven (Spencer Treat Clark) and Kirkland (Connor Rademaker) before the bomb she put in Steven's toy truck could go off.

1998: On Port Charles, Frank Scanlon (Jay Pickett) reacted to Julie Morris-Devlin (Lisa Ann Hadley)'s announcement that she is pregnant with concern, insisting that she see a doctor.

1998: On General Hospital, Carly (Sarah Brown) pretended to fall off a ladder to gain sympathy from Jason (Steve Burton).

2000:Port Charles kicked off its thirteen-week story arc format with "Fate."

2009: Indie soap Venice premiered, starring Crystal Chappell, Jessica Leccia, Galen Gering, Lesli Kay, Nadia Bjorlin, Gina Tognoni, Hillary B. Smith, Jordan Clarke, Michelle Carter, Michael Sabatino, Harrison White and Tina Sloan.

Robert Loggia Dead at 85; Soap Opera Credits Included 'The Secret Storm' and 'Search for Tomorrow'

Robert Loggia in 1977.
Oscar-nominated actor Robert Loggia has died at age 85. Loggia's wife Aubrey Loggia said he died Friday at his home in Los Angeles after a five year battle with Alzheimer's. "His poor body gave up," she said. "He loved being an actor and he loved his life."

Loggia was well known for his roles in gangster movies, playing a Miami drug lord in Scarface, which starred Al Pacino; and a Sicilian mobster in Prizzi's Honor, with Jack Nicholson and Kathleen Turner. He played wise guys in David Lynch's Lost Highway, the spoofs Innocent Blood and Armed and Dangerous, and again on David Chase's The Sopranos, as the previously jailed veteran mobster Michele "Feech" La Manna.

It was not as a gangster but as a seedy detective that Loggia received his only Academy Award nomination, as supporting actor in 1985's Jagged Edge. He played gumshoe Sam Ransom, who investigated a murder involving Glenn Close and Jeff Bridges.

Loggia gave an endearing comic performance in Penny Marshall's 1988 Big, when he danced with Tom Hanks on a giant piano keyboard. Hanks played an adolescent granted a wish to be big, overnight becoming a 30-something man who – still mentally a boy –eventually finds work at a toy company run by Loggia's character. A chance meeting in a toy store leads to the pair tapping out joyful duets of "Chopsticks" and "Heart and Soul" on the piano keys built into the floor.

Loggia also appeared in five films for comedy director Blake Edwards, including three Pink Panther films and the dark comedy S.O.B. He also portrayed Joseph, husband of Mary, in George Stevens' biblical epic The Greatest Story Ever Told.

Asked in 1990 how he maintained such a varied career, he responded: "I'm a character actor in that I play many different roles, and I'm virtually unrecognizable from one role to another. So I never wear out my welcome."

In 1966 Loggia landed the lead role in the NBC television drama T.H.E. Cat, but the series was canceled after one season. Loggia would later take on key roles in established daytime dramas. He was the third Frank Carver on CBS soap opera The Secret Storm, following Laurence Luckinbill and Jack Ryland in the role. Loggia then played Dr. Tony Vincente on CBS'Search for Tomorrow.

In 1975 he returned to TV with a role in a two-part episode of the TV show Mannix, and he was soon working regularly again. He even starred in another TV series, Mancuso, FBI, a spinoff of Loggia's character in the 1988 miniseries Favorite Son.

Among his later roles was as a general and presidential adviser in the 1996 sci-fi thriller Independence Day.

In 2003 Loggia appeared in four episodes of HBO's The Sopranos, as gangster Feech La Manna, who was released from prison and sought to return to the Mafia. Tony Soprano worried about La Manna's uncontrollable temper and tricked him into violating his parole.

The son of Sicilian immigrants, Loggia was born in 1930 in New York City's borough of Staten Island. He grew up in Manhattan's Little Italy section.

First inclined toward newspaper work, he studied journalism at the University of Missouri, but was drawn to acting and returned to New York to study at the Actors Studio.

He appeared on Studio One, Playhouse 90 and other live dramatic series during television's Golden Age. He made his stage debut off-Broadway in 1956 in "The Man with the Golden Arm," appearing in the title role of a drug addict, played in the movie by Frank Sinatra.

His Broadway debut came in 1964 with the Actors Studio production of Chekhov's "The Three Sisters" which also appeared in London.

In 1956 Loggia made his film debut in Somebody Up There Likes Me, playing mobster Frankie Peppo, who tries to persuade boxer Rocky Graziano (Paul Newman) to throw a fight.

Loggia married Marjorie Sloane in 1954, and they had three children, daughters Tracey and Kristina and son John.

After their divorce, Loggia married Audrey O'Brien in 1982.

Connie Britton on Nashville, Friday Night Lights, Ageism in Hollywood, and Her Glorious Hair
"I find a lot of people talking now about this golden age of television for women, which really has happened in the span of my career. And yet, I think back — my inspirations were Mary Tyler Moore and Lucille Ball and Marlo Thomas, all amazing women who were doing it back in the day, and that was amazing television, too. I’ve had a great opportunity to depict women who are striving to empower themselves, but in ways where they still maintain their femininity, their grace, and their vulnerability. I never get preachy about it, never get on a soapbox about it. But I do feel fortunate that I can create characters that maybe sometimes will impact somebody in a profound way."

Bill And Susan Hayes Talk About Their On- And Off-Screen Romance
The Hayes met on the NBC soap opera Days of our Lives back in 1970. Known for their roles as Doug and Julie Williams, they originally had entirely different plots before the show's head writer William Bell saw a connection between the two.

"He wrote a romance for us before we knew we were having a romance," says Susan Hayes. "So NBC said 'let's marry them.'"

A Northeastern Professor Made a Soap Opera About HIV Prevention
Rachel Jones, an associate nursing professor at Northeastern, has focused her research on curtailing HIV and AIDS transmission among urban women, particularly African American women. To move her mission forward, the National Institute of Nursing Research, part of the National Institutes of Health, awarded Jones a $2 million grant to put toward intervention efforts targeted at urban African American women between the ages of 18 and 29.

But for Jones, a classic PSA wasn't enough. Instead, she used the money to create Love, Sex, and Choices (LSC), a 12-part soap opera laced with references to responsible behaviors like safe sex and HIV testing. LSC follows the lives of four women—who, though fictional, are based on real stories—and tackles issues ranging from concerns about cheating to having sex with at-risk partners. Each episode concludes with advice from a “guide,” who points out risky behavior such as having sex with a partner who may not be monogamous.

Cicely Tyson: A pioneer stretches her acting muscles in a new career chapter
Throughout the 1960s, she continued to appear on television (on the soap opera The Guiding Light, as well as the prime-time dramas I Spy and Gunsmoke) and movies (The Comedians, The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter). While she was doing press for “Sounder,” Tyson encountered white journalists who evinced surprise that black families were just as loving and tightly knit as their own. What those reporters were saying, she realized, was that “we’re not human beings. It was those kinds of experiences that made me sit down and think, ‘You can’t just go out there and be an actress.’ I knew then that there were several issues I wanted to address, and I used my career as a platform.”

George Lucas on his decision to "break up" with Star Wars
"The issue was ultimately, they looked at the stories and they said, 'We want to make something for the fans,'" Lucas said. "People don't actually realize it's actually a soap opera and it's all about family problems - it's not about spaceships. So they decided they didn't want to use those stories, they decided they were going to do their own thing so I decided, 'fine.... I'll go my way and I let them go their way.'"
