New Head Writer Ron Carlivati Previews What's Ahead on 'Days of our Lives'

New Days of our Lives head writer Ron Carlivati previews what's ahead on the iconic NBC soap opera in the new issue of Soap Opera Digest. Carlivati's first episode airs on Wednesday, July 19.

"There will be focus on the vets because I love writing for vets," he tells the magazine. "I came in with a goal at the beginning to not bring in anybody new, to write for the people I had, so you'll see at the outset and for several months that there's some familiar faces returning, but nobody new."

Carlivati also teases the return of Chandler Massey to the cast.

"I think the assumption is that that means that's Will," he says, "but in a world of evil twins and doppelgangers and look-alikes, you never know. I'm an outsider, so I'll stand corrected if I'm wrong, but it seemed like the death of Will Horton was not a popular decision and was viewed as a mistake."

Days will find out early in 2018 whether NBC will renew the show for another year.

"We just wrote Christimas and New Year's, and that's stuff will be airing next January into February sweeps, which is right around when that decision gets made," Carlivati reveals. "I want this show to be really good because I want them to say, 'Of course we're picking it up!'"

Check out Carlivati's entire interview in the new Soap Opera Digest.

Viacom Inc. announced on Friday it has entered into a comprehensive, multi-year content partnership with the award-winning writer, director, producer, actor and playwright Tyler Perry, encompassing television, film and short-form video.

Under the terms of the agreement, Perry will produce approximately 90 episodes annually of original drama and comedy series for BET and other Viacom networks, and Viacom will have exclusive licensing rights on this programming. In addition, Viacom will have exclusive distribution rights to Perry's short-form video content, and Paramount Pictures will have exclusive "first look" rights on any new feature film concepts created by Perry.

The film agreement is effective immediately, with the partnership on Perry's TV and short-form video content to go into effect in May 2019, following the expiration of Perry's exclusive agreement with OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network. Viacom's agreement will extend through 2024.

Bob Bakish, President and Chief Executive Officer of Viacom, said, "Today's announcement represents an important step forward as Viacom continues to make swift progress against our new strategic plan. By prioritizing efforts to work with the best, most versatile talent in the entertainment industry, we are better positioned to deliver must-watch content across our brands and platforms. Tyler is a prolific creative force, and I'm excited that this collaboration will bring his signature humor and powerful storytelling to Viacom's audiences while further cementing BET's position as the leading home for bold, relevant African-American programming and scripted content."

Debra L. Lee, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of BET Networks, said, "I am delighted that we are deepening our longstanding relationship with Tyler. BET co-funded Tyler's very first feature film, we've aired his movies and many of his series with great success on our networks, and we've honored his tremendous talent with our signature awards. This partnership will allow us to work even more closely with him and bring more of his iconic content to our viewers."

"Viacom has a rich tradition of reaching my audience through their TV, film and digital platforms and I am excited to partner with them," said Perry. "I am eager to have one home where I can leverage all of their assets to tell my stories to an even wider audience. I have been very blessed to have worked with the incredible people at Lionsgate and OWN over the last few years and I look forward to continuing my work with them on a non-exclusive basis."

Perry is the creative mind behind seven television series and 16 feature films in addition to 20 plays and a best-selling book. His first television series, Tyler Perry's House of Payne set then-ratings records for a basic cable sitcom when it debuted and was followed up by the highly successful Meet the Browns. Since then he has continued to launch a series of popular programs, including the sitcom Love Thy Neighbor and the drama The Haves and The Have Nots. His films include many box office hits, including his long-lasting Madea franchise.

Actress Jodie Whittaker will be the new Doctor Who, BBC America and BBC announced on Sunday. She will be the Thirteenth Time Lord and take over from Peter Capaldi who leaves the global hit show at Christmas.

New head writer and executive producer Chris Chibnall who takes over from Steven Moffat on the next series made the decision to cast the first ever woman in the iconic role.

Jodie Whittaker says: "I'm beyond excited to begin this epic journey - with Chris and with every Whovian on this planet. It's more than an honor to play the Doctor. It means remembering everyone I used to be, while stepping forward to embrace everything the Doctor stands for: hope. I can't wait."

Chris Chibnall, New Head Writer and Executive Producer says: "After months of lists, conversations, auditions, recalls, and a lot of secret-keeping, we're excited to welcome Jodie Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor. I always knew I wanted the Thirteenth Doctor to be a woman and we're thrilled to have secured our number one choice. Her audition for The Doctor simply blew us all away. Jodie is an in-demand, funny, inspiring, super-smart force of nature and will bring loads of wit, strength and warmth to the role. The Thirteenth Doctor is on her way."

Peter Capaldi says: "Anyone who has seen Jodie Whittaker's work will know that she is a wonderful actress of great individuality and charm. She has above all the huge heart to play this most special part. She's going to be a fantastic Doctor."

Sarah Barnett, President of BBC America says: "The fact that there was so much interest in, quite literally, 'Who?' speaks volumes about the enduring power of the Doctor Who franchise around the world and for BBC America viewers. We couldn't be happier to welcome the remarkable Jodie Whittaker as a history making Thirteenth Doctor and look forward to the continuation of this story."

Charlotte Moore, Director of BBC Content says: "Making history is what Doctor Who is all about and Chris Chibnall's bold new take on the next Time Lord is exactly that. The nation is going to fall in love with Jodie Whittaker - and have lots of fun too!"

Piers Wenger, Controller BBC Drama says: "Jodie is not just a talented actor but she has a bold and brilliant vision for her Doctor. She aced it in her audition both technically and with the powerful female life force she brings to the role. She is destined to be an utterly iconic Doctor."

Matt Strevens, Executive Producer says: "I'm so thrilled that Jodie Whittaker said yes to playing the Doctor. I've been a fan for years and always hoped to work with her. She is an actor of great emotional range and inhabits every role with complete passion and conviction. Just thinking about what she will bring to the Doctor makes me as excited as a kid at Christmas. It's going to be a lot of fun."

13 Need to know answers to questions about the new Doctor Who

1) What does it feel like to be the Thirteenth Doctor?

It's very nerve-racking, as it's been so secret!

2) Why did you want the role?

To be asked to play the ultimate character, to get to play pretend in the truest form: this is why I wanted to be an actor in the first place. To be able to play someone who is literally reinvented on screen, with all the freedoms that brings: what an unbelievable opportunity. And added to that, to be the first woman in that role.

3) Has it been hard to keep the secret?

Yes. Very hard! I've told a lot of lies! I've embroiled myself in a whole world of lies which is going to come back at me when this is announced!

4) Who was the first person you told when you got the role?

My husband. Because I was allowed to!

5) Did you have a codename and if so what was it?

In my home, and with my agent, it was The Clooney. Because to me and my husband, George is an iconic guy. And we thought: what's a really famous iconic name? It was just fitting.

6) What does it feel like to be the first woman Doctor?

It feels completely overwhelming, as a feminist, as a woman, as an actor, as a human, as someone who wants to continually push themselves and challenge themselves, and not be boxed in by what you're told you can and can't be. It feels incredible.

7) What do you want to tell the fans?

I want to tell the fans not to be scared by my gender. Because this is a really exciting time, and Doctor Who represents everything that's exciting about change. The fans have lived through so many changes, and this is only a new, different one, not a fearful one.

8) What are you most excited about?

I'm most excited about becoming part of a family I didn't even know existed. I was born in 1982, it's been around longer than me, and it's a family I couldn't ever have dreamed I'd be part of.

9) How did Chris sell you the part?

We had a strange chat earlier this year where he tricked me into thinking we were talking about Broadchurch. And I started to quiz him about his new job in Wales, and asked him if I could be a baddie! And he quickly diverted the conversation to suggest I should consider auditioning to be the 13th Clooney.

It was the most incredible chat because I asked every question under the sun, and I said I'd take a few weeks to decide whether I was going to audition. He got a phone call within 24 hours. He would've got a phone call sooner, but my husband was away and there was a time difference!

10) Did he persuade you?

No. There was no persuasion needed. If you need to be persuaded to do this part, you're not right for this part, and the part isn't right for you. I also think, for anyone taking this on, you have to want to fight for it, which I certainly had to do. I know there will have been some phenomenal actors who threw their hats in the ring.

11) What are you going to wear?

Don't know yet.

12) Is that your costume in the filmed sequence which introduced you as the new Doctor?

No.

13) Have any of the other Doctors given you advice?

Well they can't because they haven't known until now, but I'm certainly expecting a couple of calls - I've got a couple of mates in there. I'm mates with a companion [Arthur Darvill], I'm mates with a trio of Doctors. I know Matt Smith, Chris Eccleston and obviously David Tennant. Oh! And let's throw in David Bradley! Four Doctors! So I'm hoping I get some calls of advice.

"No stranger to live television, Alec is the most multi-faceted actor in the world and his range is incomparable. He will put his own inimitable stamp on the role of Col. Jessep in a play that is still as surprising and relevant as ever, from one of the most gifted writers working today."

"Alec is one of our greatest actors. Having him play this role - live onstage for a television audience - is a dream come true. This will be a brand new take on Nathan Jessep and I expect that Alec is going to bust through TV screens and right into living rooms," Sorkin said.

Sorkin will write the teleplay adaptation of "A Few Good Men," which he penned at age 26 as a stage production that premiered on Broadway in 1989 at the Music Box Theatre to critical acclaim. Three years later he adapted the play as a feature film that went on to receive an Oscar nomination for best picture.

"A Few Good Men" marks NBC's first live production of a Broadway drama in more than 50 years since the network began reinvigorating live programming in 2013 with the hugely popular production of "The Sound of Music Live!," starring Carrie Underwood. That was followed by musicals "Peter Pan Live!""The Wiz Live!," and "Hairspray Live!" as well as next season's live production of "Jesus Christ Superstar" on Easter Sunday.

Baldwin won two Emmys as well as three Golden Globes for his role as Jack Donaghy on NBC's Emmy-winning comedy series "30 Rock," co-starring Tina Fey. Nominated for 18 Emmys, 11 Golden Globes, a Tony (Best Actor in a Play for "A Streetcar Named Desire") and an Academy Award (Best Supporting Actor for "The Cooler"), Baldwin is one of the most diverse actors of his generation, earning acclaim in a broad range of dramatic and comedic roles.

Prestigious or highly popular films on Baldwin's resume include "Beetlejuice,""Working Girl,""The Hunt for Red October,""Glengarry Glen Ross,""The Aviator,""The Departed" (both from director Martin Scorsese) and "Blue Jasmine," (from director Woody Allen and featuring Cate Blanchett in an Oscar-winning performance). On the TV side, Baldwin has hosted NBC's iconic late-night franchise "Saturday Night Live" a record 17 times - more than any other host. Other TV projects over Baldwin's career include "Knots Landing,""The Larry Sanders Show," the telefilms "Nuremberg" and "Path to War," and "Will & Grace."

Set in 1986 and taking place in Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Naval Base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, "A Few Good Men" centers on newbie military lawyer Lt. Daniel Kaffee, who comes up against the formidable Col. Jessep when he is asked to defend three Marines on trial for murder. Tom Hulce ("Amadeus") was nominated for a Tony for his portrayal of Kaffee on Broadway. The film adaptation starred Tom Cruise as Lt. Kaffee and Jack Nicholson as Col. Jessep.

"A Few Good Men" will air in the second quarter of 2018. A date will be announced soon.

El Dorado Pictures' Mallory Schwartz and Storyline Entertainment's Mark Nicholson will also produce. The telecast will be produced by Universal Television in association with Sony Pictures Television and Warner Bros. Television.
