"History, despite its wrenching pain, cannot be unlived, but if faced with courage, need not be lived again."
― Maya Angelou

"Today in Soap Opera History" is a collection of the most memorable, interesting and influential events in the history of scripted, serialized programs. From birthdays and anniversaries to scandals and controversies, every day this column celebrates the soap opera in American culture.

On this date in...

1933: On radio soap opera Ma Perkins, Ma (Virginia Payne) has found out about Cousin Sylvester's marriage proposal to Penny, and she wondered what kind of men the cousins were. Later that day, Lou Gehrig of the New York Yankees appeared in his 1,308th consecutive Major League Baseball game, breaking the record held by Everett Scott since 1925. Gehrig would go on to play 822 more straight games, and his record would last until broken by Baltimore Orioles star Cal Ripken, Jr. on September 6, 1995.

1967: On Dark Shadows, Julia (Grayson Hall) warned Victoria (Alexandra Moltke) not to become too chummy with Barnabas (Jonathan Frid).

1967: On Another World, Sam Lucas (Jordan Charney) berated his niece, Rachel (Robin Strasser), for running to his sister/her mother, Ada, about their argument.

1977: Leslie Charleson debuted as Monica in General Hospital, replacing Patsy Rahn in the role. Monica's pairing with Alan Quartermaine ranked 20th on our 50 Greatest Soap Couples list in 2012. Charleson has earned four Daytime Emmy nominations for her work on GH and is the longest-running actor on the show today (Denise Alexander, Genie Francis and Kin Shriner started before her but have all come and gone multiple times over the years). Prior to joining GH, Charleson starred as Iris on Love is a Many Splendored Thing (1967-1970), Alice in As the World Turns (1966), and Pam on A Flame in the Wind (1965)

1981: On General Hospital, Laura (Genie Francis), Luke (Anthony Geary) and Robert (Tristan Rogers) looked for a way to keep warm. Meanwhile, Mikkos Cassadine showed off the center of his operation including "The Dust Chamber," and the lever that would stop the freezing process.

1984: On Days of our Lives, Bo (Peter Reckell) and Hope (Kristian Alfonso) got away with the prism with help from Alice and Howie.

1988: Victoria Shaw, who played Kira Faulker on General Hospital in the mid-1970s, died at age 53.

1992: Elizabeth Keifer debuted as Blake Thorpe in Guiding Light.

2001: Actor Gerald Gordon died at age 67. His soap roles included Nick Bellini in The Doctors and Mark Dante on General Hospital.

2007: ABC aired the 10,000th episode of One Life to Live. Beloved characters returned to Llanview to celebrate the life of character Asa Buchanan including Nathan Fillion (Joey Buchanan), Dan Gauthier (Kevin Buchanan), John Loprieno (Cord Roberts), Tonja Walker (Alex Olanov) and James DePaiva (Max Holden).

"10,000 shows is a remarkable achievement," said executive producer Frank Valentini, who started at One Life to Live in 1985 with episode 4209. "I am extremely proud to be part of a show that has been able to make such an enduring mark on popular culture."

2007: On As the World Turns, Luke Snyder (Van Hansis) and Noah Mayer (Jake Silbermann) shared their first kiss, an historic moment for a gay male couple of daytime soap operas.

Below is a segment of Entertainment Tonight that previewed the kiss.

2012: On EastEnders, teenager Ben Mitchell (Joshua Pascoe) was formally charged with the murder of Heather Trott and carted off to prison -- seemingly pleased that his best mate, Jay, had followed his instructions and given him up. (Note: The character of Ben returned to Albert Square last summer, played by soap newcomer Harry Reid.)

A Complete, Concise Yearly History of TV Soap Operas

The Soap Box
Vol. III No. 10 September 1978
by John Genovese

(continued from Part 3)

1959
Two anthology serials made their appearances this year. One was For Better or Worse, seen on CBS from June 29, 1959 to June 24, 1960, which presented one marital case a week from the files of the show's narrator, sociology professor James A. Peterson. Produced by John Guedel (Art Linkletter's House Party) and directed by Hal Cooper (Maude), it proved that anthology doesn't work in the daytime.

NBC attempted The House on High Street which was based on juvenile cases and starred Philip Abbott as probation officer John Collier. It began September 29, 1959 and ended February 5, 1960.

1960
Nobody had tried a daytime serial about a drifter until Full Circle, a CBS failure with Robert Fortier as traveler Gary Donovan who came to a Maryland town. Dyan (then Diane) Cannon, John McNamara, Jean Byron and Byron Foulger (the late father of General Hospital's Rachel Ames) were supporters. Born: June 27, 1960. Died: March 1, 1961.

The Clear Horizon starred Edward Kemmer and Phyllis
Avery as Roy and Ann Selby.
Serial veteran Edward Kemmer starred as another type of traveler when he played Roy Selby on Clear Horizon, which CBS kicked off on July 11. This serial was about air corps officers at Cape Canaveral and their anxious wives. Phyllis Avery co-starred as Selby's wife, Ann, with Craig Curtis, Denise Alexander, Lee Meriwether, Grace Albertson, Ted Knight, Richard Coogan and Jan Shepard in other featured roles. Taped in California, it was canceled on March 1, 1961, but returned a year later on March 8, 1962--only to become extinct for good on June 11 of that year.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Most sources list the return date of The Clear Horizon as February 26, 1962.

ABC was the undisputed "third network" in these particular days of television, and had made no entries whatsoever into the floundering arena of daytime serials until October 10 of 1960, when The Road to Reality premiered. It was a day-to-day account of a group therapy session which starred John Beal as Dr. Lewis, with patient members played by Robert Drew, James Dimitri, Judith Braun and Kay Doubleday. A noble effort, it was nonetheless axed March 31, 1961 and quickly forgotten.

1962
From These Roots was replaced on January 2 by Our Five Daughters, clearly an effort to cash in on the success of As the World Turns with a traditional family nucleus and plenty of young characters to keep the audience happy. Esther Ralson starred as the mother, Helen Lee, with Michael Keen as her husband Jim. The five daughters were Mary (Wynne Miller), Barbara (Patricia Allison), Jane (Nuella Dierking), Marjorie (Iris Joyce) and Ann, played by current soaperstar Jacqueline Courtney. Another dismal failure for NBC, this show ended on September 28, 1962, along with the longer-running Brighter Day.

1963
April 1 of this year spelled the beginning of three-way serial competition, in which CBS was to slowly encounter more obstacles in maintaining its lead. On this day, NBC premiered two new serials and ABC premiered one.

Ben Jerrod, Attorney at Law was presented on NBC and was the first serial to be aired regularly in color. Its historical significance ends there, because it was yanked the following June 28. A Roy Winsor Production, it starred Michael M. Ryan (now John Randolph on Another World) in the title role of an attorney whose lover jilted him, causing him to take a long look at his life and shed his high-paying position to become a small-town lawyer in a community called Indian Hill. Addison Richards co-starred as his superior, John P. Abbott. Written by William Kendall Clarke, it had great possibilities but fell prey to mismanagement on the West Coast.

The Doctors starred Fred J. Scollay, Richard Roat,
Abby Lewis and Wynne Miller.
NBC had far better luck with The Doctors, which took over the New York studio vacated by Young Doctor Malone. Sponsored by Colgate-Palmolive, it had a painfully slow start and several brushes with cancellation. It began on a one-story-per-day basis, with Jock Gaylor, Richard Roat, Margo Moser and Fred. J. Scollay in the key roles. Later, it went to one story per week and added James Pritchett as Dr. Matt Powers, co-starring with Ann Williams as Dr. Maggie Fielding. On March 2, 1964, it became a full-fledged serial but continued to suffer until around 1966, when audiences became firmly enmeshed in the routine of Hope Memorial Hospital and its staff and patients. Adam Kennedy, Joan Anderson, Patricia Harty and Dorothy Blackburn were supporters in the early serial cast. The creator was Orin Tovrov.

General Hospital starred John Beradino (Steve), Emily
McLaughlin (Jessie), Robin Blake (Judy) and
Roy Thinnes (Phil).
The greatest success of the three new shows was undoubtedly ABC's General Hospital, created by Frank and Doris Hursley and written originally by Theodore and Mathilde Ferro. A gripping story of hospital life and love, it has always been headlined by John Beradino as Dr. Steve Hardy and Emily McLaughlin as nurse Jessie Brewer. Roy Thinnes, K.T. Stevens, Allison Hayes, Jana Taylor and Ralph Manza were in the original cast.

'Days of our Lives' Waters Its Roots with Next Generation: Kyler Pettis, Olivia Keegan, Jonathon McClendon, Vivian Jovanni and James Lastovic

They grow up fast on soaps, and Salem USA is about to get a whole new crop of teenagers. Days of our Lives is aging five child characters into young adults: Ciara, Theo, Chase, Claire and Joey.

On August 28, Patch and Kayla's son Joey, last seen as a 6-year-old, will pop up as a troubled teen played by newcomer James Lastovic. A new Ciara Brady (Vivian Jovanni) and Chase Jennings (Jonathon McClendon) will both arrive October 30. Then comes Theo Carver (Kyler Pettis) on November 3, followed by Claire Brady (Olivia Keegan) November 25.

“Young people are the life blood of any soap—especially ours as we head toward our 50th anniversary in November,” executive producer Ken Corday tells TV Insider. “By aging these children into young adults, we’re making them more relatable to our audience and more dramatically exciting. These are not ancillary characters, but young leads. None of them will be a goody two-shoes. Each is somewhat flawed.”

The next generation will share similarities with their parents. For example, Ciara will be reminiscent of her mom, Hope, and Joey is very much like Patch.

“My late mom [Days executive producer Betty Corday] used to say, ‘You have to water the roots of the Days of our Lives tree with a new generation every 10 years or so,’ and that’s what we’ve done,” Corday notes. “These are the children of the children of the children of the children, and they are vital to our future.”

Meanwhile, is Days adding an Emmy winner to its cast?

NEWS: Jen Lilley, Al Sharpton, Chandler Massey, Shonda Rhimes, Gabriel Mann

EastEnders Ben and Paul stripped down to their boxers near a dead body.
EastEnders funeral parlor gay embrace cleared by TV watchdog
Ofcom has cleared a controversial EastEnders scene that showed two men half naked in a funeral parlor of breaching the broadcasting code. The media regulator received 76 complaints about the scene in the BBC1 soap, which showed characters Ben Mitchell and Paul Coker stripped off above the waist and embracing in front of a dead body in an open coffin.

“Ofcom assessed a number of complaints about a storyline in these episodes and concluded they didn’t raise issues warranting further investigation,” said a spokesman for the broadcasting regulator. “We found the scenes were justified in the context of a long running plot line and sexual contact between the characters was implied rather than overt.”

Al Sharpton and Andre Leon Talley to appear in season 2 premiere of Empire
Empire’s imprisoned patriarch Lucious Lyon (Terrence Howard) will get the support of two very powerful real-life figures in the season 2 premiere: Reverend Al Sharpton and fashion icon André Leon Talley will both appear when the Fox hit returns on September 22 to show their support for the embattled music CEO at an epic, outdoor “Free Lucious” concert.

Days of our Lives star Jen Lilley: "I’m going down in soap glory!"
“I play everything balls-to-the-wall,” she says. “My worry is not pushing the audience too far. I worry about not being full-on committed in every moment, which is not always easy in the crazy world of soaps. I had a storyline where Theresa got pregnant and had her fetus stolen. All I could say was, ‘Bring it on! I know this is goofy, but I’m going down in soap glory!’”

Jen Lilley on working with Days co-star Thaao Penghlis
“Soap opera legend, Thaao Penghlis, played Lord Haman. When we filmed The Book of Esther I had just finished my run as Maxie Jones on ABC’s General Hospital, so Thaao and I instantly bonded over our shared soap opera background and swapped behind-the-scenes stories. One day, Thaao told me he has died and come back to life 6 times on NBC’s Days of Our Lives! I giggled and asked him which death was his favorite, and he said, one time his character, Tony, died because someone slit his carotid artery. The fans were so outraged that Tony was killed off, that a short time later, his character came back, driving a boat, with his fabulous Fabio-esque hair blowing in the wind, and as the camera zoomed in, you could see a BAND-AID on his neck where his carotid was sliced! I was in stitches, no pun intended!

“Now, three years later, Thaao and I are working together on Days of our Lives. It’s funny how paths intertwine. Thaao is one of the finest actors I’ve ever met…he’s mesmerizing. It’s almost unfair having to act opposite of him, because you don’t want to say your lines; you want to be an audience member, rapt by his performance!”

Scandal Season 5 to mark the 'reconstitution' of the Gladiators
Acknowledging that the show’s central Gladiator conceit was sidelined a bit in Season 4 because “we were busy healing” Olivia, Shonda Rhimes says Season 5 will feature “the reconstitution” of Team OPA.

Heroes Reborn premiere expanded to two hours, The Blacklist delayed one week
Heroes Reborn will air from 8 to 10 p.m. on September 24. It will be followed at 10 p.m. by the series premiere of The Player, starring Wesley Snipes.

Revenge star Gabriel Mann to visit The Mysteries of Laura
Mann will play Shane Parker, a “charismatic entrepreneur who co-founded a billion dollar nano-tech company.” Shane’s suspicious behavior after his partner’s death gets the attention of the NYPD, making Shane a suspect.

Ricky Martin and Reese Witherspoon to appear on premiere of Neil Patrick Harris' upcoming live show, Best Time Ever
Harris clearly is struggling with the secrecy around the show, though he did let slip that both Ricky Martin and Reese Witherspoon have been booked to appear. "All of us will be seeing it together for the first time on September 15," he said. "It feels to me more pressure in anticipation because it's a blind commit in some ways. We don't want to reveal every single thing. We're holding a lot of cards close to our vest because that's what's going to make it exciting."

If NBC's Coach reboot is a success, ALF could be next
“It’s not a direct kind of reboot,” NBC entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt said about the new Coach, with original creator Barry Kemp. It’s a picking up and it’s an extended family and Hayden is a grandfather, and a father-and-son story. So it’s a way to do another variation on a family show with, I think, a truly talented star and a great showrunner and a presold title. And if that works, then ALF: The Series is next.”

Dolly Parton's next NBC Movies to be based on her songs "Jolene" and "The Seeker"
According to executive producer Sam Haskell, the network and Parton will next tackle "Jolene," based on her 1973 hit. John Sacret Young (The West Wing) is writing the script.

Days of our Lives alum Chandler Massey recalls his first day on set
"I remember the first day I had like four lines, and the choice I were just so wrong," Massey (ex-Will Horton) joked on a special AfterBuzz TV appearance.

Another World starred Jacqueline Courtney, Vera Allen and Susan Trustman
as Alice, Granny and Pat Matthews.
A Complete, Concise Yearly History of TV Soap Operas

The Soap Box
Vol. III No. 10 September 1978
by John Genovese

(continued from Part 4)

1964
Another slow-but-sure hit came on May 4 when NBC cashed in on Irna Phillips' knack for family drama. Another World began as the story of the Matthews family following the death of attorney Will Matthews. The role of Will's flighty and domineering widow Liz Matthews was originated by Sarah Cunningham but soon taken over by Audra Lindley. John Beal was Jim, Virginia Dwyer was Mary, Susan Trustman was Pat, and Jacqueline Courtney was Alice. A Procter & Gamble Production, it was the first soap to deal with the subject of abortion and also the first to expand to a full hour on January 6, 1975. William J. Bell originally co-wrote the series.

Alas, this sudden string of success was short-lived. On October 5, 1964, The Young Marrieds made its mark on ABC as another West Coast serial. Created by James Elward (The Secret Storm), it revolved around three married couples in New York City. Peggy McCay, Paul Picerni, Susan Brown (now Dr. Gail Adamson, General Hospital), Mike Mikler, Norma Connolly and Barry Russo starred. Comedy actor and director Charles Grodin, Susan Seaforth, Irene Tedrow and Constance Moore held other roles. It expired March 25, 1966.

The combined experience of producer Joseph Hardy and head writer Don Ettinger went for naught when both left Love of Life for a new ABC venture enttitled, Flame in the Wind. A very promising and contemporary story of families from opposite sides of the tracks, it featured Margaret Hayes, Tom Fielding, Walter Coy and Rita Lloyd as the wealthy faction, with Lenka Petersen, Roy Poole and Beverly Hayes on the blue-collar side. It began December 28, 1964 and was retitled A Time for Us on June 28, 1965. As of December 16, 1966 it had no title, no cast and no home, but it helped inspire other ABC hits to come.

1965
NBC should have realized its mistake in doing a serial in Toronto, Canada. Moment of Truth had a virtually unfamiliar cast with the exception of its star--Douglas Watson, now Mac Cory of Another World, who portrayed professor Robert Wallace. A story about life in a college town, it lasted from January 4 to November 5.

Eileen Fulton moved from daytime to primetime in
the ATWT spinoff series Our Private World.
Although it wasn't a daytime serial, Our Private World is still worth of mention because despite its time format (two nights per week), it was produced in the same manner as a daytime serial--on videotape. (Peyton Place was done on film.) It was also the spin-off of As the World Turns which starred Eileen Fulton as Lisa Hughes starting a new life in Chicago and meeting up with an upper-crust family, the Eldridges, represented by Geraldine Fitzgerald, Nicolas Coster, Sam Groom and Julienne Marie. When Lisa became pitifully underexposed, the show met the scrap heap. A product of Irna Phillips and Bill Bell, it began May 5 and ended September 10 on CBS.

On September 27, 1965, four more failures were born--two on NBC and two on ABC.

NBC was now attempting a late-morning block of soaps with Morning Star and Paradise Bay, both created by Ted Corday (Guiding Light, As the World Turns) and taped in California. Both youth-oriented stories with sophisticated backdrops, they never caught on and were both terminated on July 1, 1966.

Morning Star was set in New York and starred Elizabeth Perry as fashion designer Katy Elliott, with Edward Mallory (now of Days as Bill Horton) as her love interest. Bill Riley, Ed Prentiss, Sheila Bromley, Betsy Jones Moreland, John Dehner and Ron Jackson were in supporting roles.

Paradise Bay was a pictureesque coastal town in California. Keith Andes starred as radio personality Jeff Morgan, with Happy Days' Marion Ross as his wife Mary. Heather North and Dennis Cole were the young interests, and such veterans as Walter Brooke, Alice Rineheart, June Dayton, Mala Powers and K.T. Stevens appeared. Its younger characters comprised a rock group called "The Moonglows"--that alone was enough to send viewers packing for Rosehill or Oakdale.

Leave It to Beaver's Tony Dow starred as Chet in
Never Too Young.
ABC jumped on the youth kick that same day with Never Too Young, with Malibu Beach as its locale. Little more than a continuing beach party, it featured Tony Dow, Robin Grace and Tommy Rettig. It emanated from California and exited on June 24, 1966.

The network's other new offering was the complete opposite--a hospital soap with an unending sea of incredible melodramatics. That was The Nurses, a serialized version of an old CBS nighttime drama. The weekday show starred Mary Fickett as nurse Liz Thorpe of Alden General Hospital, with Melinda Plank, Nat Polen, Judson Laire, Sally Gracie and Paul Stevens in other important roles. Produced by Doris Quinlan, it departed on March 31, 1967.

Maree Cheatham, Macdonald Carey and Mary Jackson
starred as Marie, Tom and Alice Horton in the Days of our
Lives
pilot. Jackson was replaced by Frances Reid as
Alice when Days premiered on November 8, 1965.
The last serial attempt of 1965, however, was certainly no fad. Days of our Lives made its debut on November 8 as a creation of Irna Phillips, Ted Corday and Allan Chase. The saga of the problem-plagued Hortons, it limped along for two years and then took off like a shot. Macdonald Carey (Dr. Tom Horton), Frances Reid (Alice Horton) and John Clarke (Mickey Horton) remain the stars.

Telemundo Begins Production on New Telenovela 'Quién es quién'

Kimberly Dos Ramos, Laura Flores, Eugenio Siller and Danna Paola
star in Quién es quién.
Telemundo Studios has announced the production kick off in its new telenovela Quién es quién, starring Danna Paola, Eugenio Siller, Laura Flores and Kimberly Dos Ramos. The romantic comedy tells the story of twin brothers who live separate lives until fate reunites them and forces them to switch places, thrusting them into some sticky situations and others that are downright humorous. Filmed in Miami and Los Angeles, Quién es quién is directed by Luis Manzo (Tierra de Reyes, Santa Diabla) with a script by Laura Sosa (En otra piel). Joshua Mintz and Carmen Urbaneja (Tierra de Reyes, En otra piel) serve as executive producers.

Full of thrills, contrasts and humor, Quién es quién is Danna Paola’s first production for Telemundo. She plays the role of Paloma, a single mother who works at a flower stand. Over the course of the story, Paloma overcomes her distrust of the opposite sex and finds love with a man she never expected to care for.

Sharing top billing is Eugenio Siller, who, for the first time in his career, takes on the challenge of playing two characters at once: Pedro (“Perico”) and Leonardo, twin brothers separated at birth by a dark secret, and reunited years later through an accidental trick of fate. In the midst of coincidence and confusion, destiny and love conspire to intertwine the lives of these two men, who may be identical in appearance but have completely distinct personalities.

The production also marks the return of leading lady Laura Flores to Telemundo in the role of Inés, a determined woman who lets nothing stand in the way of her family’s well-being. But malice, resentment and intrigue come her way in the form of the charismatic Fernanda Manrique, played by Kimberly Dos Ramos, who puts her incomparable talent to work to portray a villain whose beauty hides a bottomless thirst for revenge.

Joining these stars is a supporting cast featuring Jonathan Islas, Carlos Espejel, Guillermo Quintanilla, Gabriel Valenzuela, Marissa del Portillo, Sandra Desteneve, Fernando Carrera, Isabella Castillo, Daniela Wong, Maite Embil, Gabriel Rossi, Kenya Hijuelos, Ruben Morales, Oka Giner, Adrian Di Monti, Isabel Moreno, Alex Ruiz, Silvana Arias, Armando Torrea, Maria del Pilar, Sofia Reca, Fernando Pacanins, Nicolas Magniole, Daniela Macias and Gisella Abounrad.

1966
The final attempt at serial anthology to date was Confidential for Women, which stuck it out a few months on ABC. It involved week-long stories based on cases of co-narrator Dr. Theodore Isaac Rubin. Jane Wyatt was the key narrator.

On June 27, 1966, ABC instituted another fad. Fortunately, it was a long-running and commercially successful fad in daytime. It was Dark Shadows, created by Dan Curtis and produced by Robert Costello. The spooky, campy account of ghastly doings in the Collingwood mansion, it made stars out of Jonathan Frid, David Selby, Kate Jackson, Donna McKechnie and Roger Davis, and was graced by such "established" talents as Joan Bennett, Grayson Hall, Clarice Beckham, Anthony George and Jerry Lacy. It ended April 2, 1971, when it was decided the show ran its course.

Wedding scene, on the set, from Love is a Many
Splendored Thing
.
1967
CBS, which hadn't premiered a soap in seven years, enlisted Irna Phillips in adapting a serial very loosely from a famous novel and movie. Love is a Many Splendored Thing concerned the in-laws of the book's protagonist Mark Elliot, who intermarried with other surrounding families in San Francisco. A stylish and refreshing story, it was a fabulous stepping stone for David Birney, Donna Mills and Leslie Charleson (now Dr. Monica Webber on General Hospital), all beautiful and talented young performers. Other established serial veterans on the series included Judson Laire, Gloria Hoye, Jane Manning, Albert Stratton and Paula Trueman. Its most popular producer was John Conboy, who brought his special stylish magic to The Young and the Restless. Its head writer regimes were among the finest: Jane and Ira Avery, Don Ettinger, James Lipton, and finally Ann Marcus (Days of our Lives). After numerous cast changes alienated viewers, it was lopped off on March 23, 1973, after five and a half years.

1968
Agnes Nixon (top) created One Life to Live in 1968.
ABC finally scored another hit on July 15 with Agnes Nixon's One Life to Live. Mrs. Nixon, a protege of Irna Phillips, had been head writer of The Guiding Light and Another World before creating this individualistic story of American families from all ethnic groups and walks of life who found their melting pop in the city of Llanview, supposedly outside of Philadelphia. Lee Patterson has been playing Joe Riley, editor of the Banner, since the shows's inception (except for a year's absence). Another original, Lillian Hayman, returned as Sadie Gray after several years. Other originals on the show included Doris Belack, Allan Miller, Patricia Roe, Ernest Graves, Antony Ponzini and Trish van Devere.

On December 30, NBC started Hidden Faces which immediately had two strikes against it. It was trying to emulate Edge of Night in its crime drama aspect (Irving Vendig created Faces with Charles Fisher and Lawrence White, all Edge alumni), and it was scheduled opposite the almighty As the World Turns. Conard Fowkes, Gretchen Walther, Tony LoBianco, Stephen Joyce and Ludi Claire starred, and it was terminated on June 30, 1969.

1969
Where the Heart Is starred James Mitchell as
Julian Hathaway.
This was the year that the CBS Television network leased Love of Life and The Secret Storm from American Home Products, abruptly forcing out Roy Winsor. Besides owning Love Is a Many Splendored Thing, the network went ahead on a fourth project which came from the typewriters of former Edge writers Lou Scofield and Margaret DePriest. It was Where the Heart Is, the engrossing (but often hilarious) saga of the moderately wealthy Hathaway family in the very proper Connecticut town of Northcross. Diana van der Vlis was Kate, James Mitchell was Julian, and Louise Shaffer was Allison. Other performers included Diana Walker, Gregory Abels, Mark Gordon, Delphi Harrington, Barbara Boxley, David Cryer and Priscilla Pointer. Its final writing regime was that of Claire Labine and Paul Avila Mayer, who went on to write Love of Life and create the popular Ryan's Hope. It began September 8, 1969, and would probably still be running had network dealings not become so sticky in 1973. It ended on March 23 of that year, along with Love Is a Many Splendored Thing. Its last two directors--Richard Dunlap and Bill Glenn--also directed Love's replacement, The Young and the Restless.

NBC and Bing Crosby Productions in Hollywood came up with a daytime vehicle for Dana Andrews entitled Bright Promise, created by Frank and Doris (General Hospital) Hursley and directed originally by Gloria Monty (Secret Storm, General Hospital). Andrews played Tom Boswell, president of Bancroft College, with support from Coleen Gray, Ivor Francis, Richard Eastham, Susan Brown and Paul Lukather. After Andrews left and the show changed format, the ratings rose but not enough. Born: September 29, 1969. Died: March 30, 1972.

"Today in Soap Opera History" is a collection of the most memorable, interesting and influential events in the history of scripted, serialized programs. From birthdays and anniversaries to scandals and controversies, every day this column celebrates the soap opera in American culture.

On this date in...

1929: NBC Blue network broadcast Amos 'n' Andy, starring Freeman Gosden and Charles Correll, for the first time. The show ran as a nightly radio serial from 1928 (starting at local WMAQ) until 1943, then as a weekly situation comedy from 1943 to 1955.

1953: On Search for Tomorrow, Arthur Tate (Terry O'Sullivan) told Nathan Walsh he planned on leaving Henderson and forgetting all about Joanne Baron (Mary Stuart).  Later, Stu Bergman (Larry Haines) asked Nathan what kind of troubles Arthur was having.

1957: CBS replaced Valiant Lady with Roy Winsor's Hotel Cosmopolitan starring Donald Woods as the narrator of the goings-on in a plush New York hotel. Supporting players included James Pritchett (Dr. Matt Powers, The Doctors), Henderson Forsythe (Dr. David Stewart, As the World Turns), Wesley Lau, Tom Shirley and Walter Brooke.

1969: On The Doctors, Dr. Nick Bellini (Gerald Gordon) made plans to have his amnesiac wife, Althea (Elizabeth Hubbard), move home with him.

1976: On Days of our Lives, Valerie Grant (Tina Andrews) was unhappy with her parents decision to not help Adele Hamilton.

1981: Kin Shriner aired for the final time as Jeb Hampton in Texas.

1987: On Ryan's Hope, Ben (James Wlcek) showed up at the church just as Lizzie (Catherine Larson) was about to walk down the aisle to marry John Reid (Jason Adams).

1996: On The Young and the Restless, Nathan Hastings (Adam Lazarre-White) died in the hospital after being struck by a car. Before succumbing to his injuries, Nathan talked to his son, Nate Jr. (Bryant Jones), one last time, then asked his estranged wife, Olivia (Tonya B. Williams), for forgiveness. The character of Nathan, first called "Kong," was created by William J. Bell in 1984. Prior to Lazzare-White, the character had been played by actors Forest Whitaker, Nathan Purdee and Randy Brooks.

Thanks to FoxCrane for sending in the item above.

1996: On Days of our Lives, Marlena (Deidre Hall) told Kristen (Eileen Davidson) that once she told John her true feelings, John would want to be with her and not Kristen. Meanwhile, Daniel Scott returned to Salem and blackmailed Peter Blake (Jason Brooks), who was planning a honeymoon with Jennifer (Stephanie Cameron). Later, Kristen collapsed when John told her that Rachel and Stefano were presumed dead.

1996: On General Hospital, Robin (Kimberly McCullough) and Jason (Steve Burton) arrived in Montauk, and Robin remembered it was Stone's birthday. Later, Jason held Robin, who said, "I wanted to be with you this way for so long. And I didn't think we could without having sex."

1996: On Another World, Frankie Frame (Alice Barrett) was brutally murdered. Before she died, Frankie tried to leave a clue about the killer's identity.

Margaret DePriest was Another World's head writer at the time. Jill Farren Phelps had resigned as executive producer on August 4th, and would be replaced by former NBC vice president Charlotte Savitz. In an interview with TV Guide Magazine in August 2012, Phelps (now executive producer of The Young and the Restless) declared she was not responsible for Frankie's death.

"Look, I'm sorry I killed Maureen Bauer on Guiding Light all those years ago," Phelps said, "but I am not responsible for the death of Frankie Frame on Another World! That was not my doing and I am tired of taking the heat for having killed a character when I didn't!"

This seemed to conflict somewhat with what Phelps said at the time.

”I am not going to claim absolutely no responsibility. The truth of the matter is the fans have to understand that Frankie did not die to make way for Robert Kelker-Kelly to come in. That is not the truth. What is the truth is that up until now, AW did not enjoy the kind of financial freedom the other shows do. There are so many beans in the jar, and people do have to go to make room for other people. It is not true that I did not like Alice; it is true that I like everybody to get an A story, and I get stymied when I find myself up against something I don't quite understand."

2004: Actor Remo Pisani, who played Speed Taft in The Edge of Night, died at age 85.

2008: On One Life to Live, Bo (Robert S. Woods) spoke with his late father, Asa Buchanan (Phil Carey). Bo: "You can rest now, Pa." Asa: "You and your brother were the best things I ever did."

The Young and the Restless alum Steve Ford (actor and son of President Gerald Ford and Betty Ford) will join with emcee Jearlyn Steele to lend their voices and personal stories of overcoming adversity to a captivated audience at this year’s Voices for Victory gala to raise funds for Emma Norton Services.

As a motivational speaker, Steve Ford has entertained and inspired audiences with anecdotes of how his famous family dealt with his mother's battles with alcoholism and breast cancer and how he overcame his own struggles with the bottle. He talks about the high price he paid for bad choices involving drugs and alcohol, the early habits he formed that led to his addiction, and his road to recovery. He will share many historic and never-before-seen photos, slides, and videos.

All proceeds benefit Emma Norton Services, an organization that provides housing and support to women and families struggling with mental illness and chemical dependency.

More information can be found at emmanorton.org or by calling (651) 251-2632.

The son of former President Gerald R. Ford and Betty Ford, Steve Ford has successfully negotiated the bumpy road from the White House to a successful 20-year career as an actor in Hollywood. A teenager when his father assumed the reins of the presidency from Richard Nixon, Ford left the White House ate age 18 to pursue his dream of being a cowboy on cattle ranches out West, followed closely by his ten secret service agents.

He later went on to a successful acting career, appearing in over 30 movies including Contact with Jodie Foster, Armageddon with Bruce Willis, Starship Troopers, Eraser with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Heat with Al Pacino, and When Harry Met Sally as Meg Ryan's boyfriend.

Ford also appeared as Andy Richards for six years on the Emmy Award-winning daytime drama The Young and The Restless, hosted the NBC show Secret Service, and has appeared in shows such as JAG, Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman and Suddenly Susan.

One of Ford's most rewarding roles has been that of motivational speaker, relating his inspiring experiences during his family's stay in the White House and his years in Hollywood. He shares a broad range of stories, including how his family dealt with Betty Ford's battles with alcoholism and breast cancer, and his own successful fight in overcoming alcoholism.

"My first job was on Days of our Lives playing her [Deidre Hall's]
step-daughter," Bregman explained. "Before I got the job my mom was a
huge Days of our Lives watcher, so when I got the job, my job was to
come in and break up my favorite couple, Don and Marlena. Deidre is one
of the great people of all-time.  She took me under her wing, was so
extraordinary to me, and taught me everything."
The Young and the Restless Emmy winner Tracey Bregman was a guest on Hallmark Channel's Home & Family on Tuesday. She talked about her career, including seeing a numerologist when her job prospects slowed down at age 14.

"I had been on Days of our Lives for two and a half years," Bregman explained, joking, "at 14, things can slow down as they do."

It was adding the "e" to Tracy and a middle initial that saved her career!

Bregman played Donna Craig on Days from 1978 to 1980 before joining Y&R as Lauren Fenmore.

"I thought it would be greatest summer gig of all-time," Bregman said about her start at Y&R.

Asked to describe her Y&R co-star and love interest Christian LeBlanc (Michael Baldwin) in one word, Bregman chose "awesome."
