Indiana quarterback Zander Diamont celebrates after scoring a touchdown
against Ohio State on October 3.
Indiana senior QB Nate Sudfeld left the third quarter of Saturday's match-up with Ohio State due to an apparent lower body injury. That meant sophomore Zander Diamont, son of The Bold and the Beautiful star Don Diamont, entered the game.

In the 4th quarter, with Indiana having just gone down by 14, Diamont ran for a 79-yard touchdown, giving the Hoosiers momentary hope of upsetting the No. 1 team in the college football polls.

Ohio State won the game 34-27, but Zander Diamont—who added 30 pounds between his freshmen and sophomore years—provided his team with a burst of excitement, and much hope for the future.

Watch his touchdown run below:

Mother Daughter Relationships: An "Imitation of Life" on Daytime TV

The Soap Box
Vol. IV No. 1 January 1979

(continued from Part 3)

The relationship Maeve Ryan (Ryan's Hope) has with her daughters Mary and Siobhan is a study in contrasts: Mary is everything Maeve wants in a daughter. She's bright, warm, competent, completely family-oriented and fairly conventional. Siobhan, on the other hand, is a rebel; a non-conformist who never allowed herself to be squeezed into the classic Ryan mold. While Johnny Ryan can accept Siobhan—and even enjoy the offbeat nature she most likely inherited from him—Maeve and her daughters are on a constant collision course. No one can deny that Mary is the favorite—not even Maeve—and that's something Siobhan will always have to live with. But what's harder for her to cope with is her mother's inability to have faith in her, to give her a chance. For her part, Siobhan reacts like a young child, testing her mother to see just how far she can go. Taking a job in a family planning center was just that kind of move, since Siobhan knew all-too-well her mother's strong feelings on abortion.

On All My Children, college girl Devon Shepherd and her mother, Ellen, have a warm, open relationship...so important to Devon when she recently learned she was pregnant (and unwed). After discussing various alternatives, Ellen and her fiance offered to adopt the baby and raise it as their own. On the surface that seemed the perfect solution; social workers, however, pointed out that the child would eventually become a source of conflict for Devon and Ellen. Each would seek authority in raising the child, even though the original plan called for Devon to play the "big sister."

Several years ago, Carla (Clara) Hall and her mother, Sadie Gray (One Life to Live) played out a dramatic plotline reminiscent of the film classic, Imitation of Life. Carla was a very pale-skinned black girl who sought to cast off her heritage and seek a better life. In masquerading as white for quite a long time, Carla deeply hurt her proud mother who had worked as a scrubwoman to give the girl whatever advantages she could. Even now—married to a black policeman and seeming to have come to terms with her identity—Carla doesn't use her given name, Clara, although that's the only name her "mama" calls her.

Kathleen Cullen played Amanda Wexler on
Guiding Light.
Perhaps the heaviest psychological plot now going on in the soaps between mother and daughter is taking place on Guiding Light, where a tormented Amanda Wexler is reliving nightmarish childhood experiences that have virtually crippled her as a young woman.

To a casual observer, Amanda would seem to have led a charmed life: her wealthy mother dressed her in the most magnificent clothes, bought her exquisite dolls and playthings, and furnished a storybook bedroom fit for a princess. But when the sensitive child witnessed her mother being beaten by a lover, it became a lifelong burden for her to carry.

Her mother constantly admonished her to keep their "secret"; be ladylike; and keep her skirts down. Amanda became a frightened, withdrawn, friendless child who mimicked the mother-daughter scenes with a look-alike doll. Now, Amanda is frigid, unable to find happiness in a marriage disapproved of by her mother, who prefers that Amanda remain a virtual hermit in her childhood home. Her horrible memories and fears are surfacing again as Amanda sees herself in a portrait her mother commissioned from neighbor-artist Ben McFarren. Only in his presence does the girl feel "alive" and possessed of a sense of her own sexuality.

Through the years, mother-daughter relationships have undergone many changes. No medium is better equipped to dramatize them than the ongoing serial, whose strength lies in the development and growth of such characters.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend premieres October 12 on The CW.
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend premieres tonight at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.

Rebecca Bunch has always been wound a little tightly. It’s something that served her well as she has raced up the ladder at her corporate law firm in New York. It may also be why she has no life. So when Rebecca bumps into Josh Chan – her handsome, long-ago summer camp-sweetheart – she knows that it’s a sign. A sign for her to quit her job, drop everything, and move across the country to West Covina, California – where, in a huge, definitely-unrelated coincidence, Josh just happens to live.

With her impressive résumé, Rebecca quickly lands a new job at a local law firm, where her boss, Darryl, is more of a star-struck admirer than an authority figure. Not everyone is immediately enamored with the new hire, as the firm’s head paralegal, Paula, is at first suspicious of Rebecca’s reasons for relocation. However, in dealing with some secret personal troubles of her own, Paula becomes empathic to Rebecca’s unrequited crush, and the two form a unique bond.

Settling into her new Southern California surroundings, Rebecca eventually tears herself away from lurking on Josh’s Facebook page long enough to agree to a date with Josh’s friend, Greg, who works at the local sports bar. But Rebecca discovers her social media stalking has failed to uncover one important detail – Josh’s girlfriend, Valencia.

Rebecca’s contagious, sometimes-delusional enthusiasm begins to stir the citizens of West Covina, including her cynical neighbor, Heather, shaking them up and giving them a new soundtrack to their lives.

The multi-talented Ian Verdun stars as Melvin Everman in Life's a Drag.
Life's a Drag premiered at Brooklyn Web Fest on Friday, October 9. Based on the positive reaction from a packed theater, creator and star Ian Verdun has a hit on his hands.

Life's a Drag is a story about self-discovery as straight(ish) down-on-his-luck actor, Melvin Everman (played by Verdun), in an act of desperation, "inexplicably embarks on a journey that will lead him to Drag superstardom. Along the he'll will meet a host of colorful characters, some new and some old as he struts his way to glory. But before the crown is won, he'll have to go toe to toe with more than a few shady queens, and be forced to come to terms with the most damaged parts of himself, forever altering the perception of his own identity, and testing the foundations of his relationships."

Chatting with members of the audience at Brooklyn Web Fest, it was obvious the pilot made an impact. Viewers instantly cared about Mel and his friends, rooted for him, and against the boss that fired him (played by series director Sebastian La Cause, Hustling). The superb pilot script was full of humor and heart, and sets up a potentially fascinating journey for Mel that seems new and fresh.

I asked Verdun what inspired him to create Life's a Drag.

"Honestly, I wrote the first episode in three days after experiencing my worst year in recent memory," Verdun explained. "It was the kind of year where life just takes a huge crap on you...repeatedly...in rapid succession. Really, the only way I could retain any form of sanity was to write about. I think a lot of artists can relate to exercising their demons through their craft, I'm certainly no different."

Ian Verdun in Life's a Drag.
"I'm also a huge fan of RuPaul's Drag Race and I live in West Hollywood so drag almost seems like a constant element playing in the background of my life," he said. " I've always respected the craft of Drag Queens, not to mention the mystique involved in their profession. So Life's a Drag was born. It's a way for me as an artist to explore (and pay homage to) a group of artists who's world I find to be fascinating, and at the same time take an active part in making sure that quality LGBT stories, not to mention diverse stories have a place to be heard. I really love the idea of humanizing the world of drag; of getting to the moments out of the makeup and away from the spotlight, to tell the story of group of disparate people who are all drawn to this life, putting on perfect faces as they deal with all the very real drama present in their day to day lives. As an artist, I want the freedom to tell a story as truthfully as possible, and to shine a light on communities who's stories deserve to be told. And if that all sounds a bit too self-righteous, you could also say I just really wanted to see what I'd look like all dolled up. Suffice it to say, I wasn't disappointed."

The cast also includes Toofun West, Santana Dempsey, Amanda Hyde, Andy Gala and Stephen Guarino.

The Life's a Drag team is taking a slightly different approach to crowdfunding. The show is currently raising the money necessary to produce the second episode, and to get the word out, via an Indiegogo campaign.

The first part of the pilot is now available online. Check it out below:

Chloe (Elizabeth Hendrickson) wants justice for Delia.
On Monday's (October 12) episode of The Young and the Restless, Jill (Jess Walton) suggested to Billy (Burgess Jenkins) that they plant a tree in Chancellor Park in honor of Delia on the second anniversary of her death. Meanwhile, thanks to Victor (Eric Braeden) vouching for him, Adam (Justin Hartley) was released on bail. As family and friends gathered at the park to remember Delia, Adam showed up, to the shock of the crowd, who didn't see that Chloe (Elizabeth Hendrickson) had also arrived.

On Tuesday's Y&R, Adam seeks forgiveness.

"No one wants to hear a damn word you have to say," Billy tells him.

Jack (Peter Bergman) says that Adam should be allowed to speak, claiming Delia would have looked into Adam's heart and seen the best in him. As Adam tells the group he would gladly give his life for Delia's, Chloe reveals herself with a slow clap.

"Oscar worthy performance, Adam, congratulations," Chloe says. "It looks like you even fooled some people here. You may have a different face but I know deep inside you're still the same insincere bastard you've always been."

Chloe then declares she wants justice for Delia and pulls out a gun. Will Chelsea (Melissa Claire Egan) be able to talk her down? And what other big secret is Chloe hiding?

Later, an angry Jill wants to know how Jack could have helped Adam while he was pretending to be Gabe.

Elsewhere, Devon (Bryton James) and Dylan (Steve Burton) take the law into his own hands while trying to find Hilary. Is this the end of the line for Neil (Kristoff St. John)?

Jensen Buchanan
Jensen Buchanan, who was nominated for two Daytime Emmy Awards for her work while Jill Farren Phelps was executive producer of Another World, is reuniting with her old boss, who is now executive producer of The Young and the Restless. According to Soap Opera Digest, Buchanan will Elise Moxley, who is described as a member of Genoa City's social set.

"I was really honored that Young and Restless would come to me and say, ‘Do you want to do this part?’ “ Buchanan tells Digest. “I wasn’t exactly playing hard to get. I was just kind of retired and was sort of finished with that chapter in my life."

Buchanan began her career at One Life to Live, where she played Sarah Gordon Buchanan. She moved to Another World in 1991 to replace Anne Heche in the role of twins Vicky and Marley Hudson. She played Vicky for the show's final eight years, then reprised the character on As the World Turns. In 2001, she signed on to played Melissa Bradford on General Hospital while still technically under contract with ATWT's producer, Procter & Gamble Productions (Televest). She was sued for breach of contract. Her last major television appearance was a guest spot on Everwood in November 2002.

Buchanan is scheduled to make her Y&R debut on November 13.

Catching Up with Multi-Talented Former 'Guiding Light' Star Sonia Satra

From 1993 to 1997, Sonia Satra starred as Lucy Cooper on the CBS daytime drama Guiding Light. Lucy eventually left Springfield behind after marrying Alan-Michael Spaulding (played by Rick Hearst, then Michael Dietz). After leaving Guiding Light, Satra guest-starred on Baywatch and played Barbara Graham on ABC's One Life to Live, and went on to appear in a number of movies and TV series including Hyacinth, Soldier of Fortune, Pride & Loyalty, The Drum Beats Twice, Redum and The Men Who Built America.

Today, the multi-talented Satra has added certified life coach, fitness instructor, and award-winning motivational speaker (she was president of the National Speakers Association – NYC!) to her list of accomplishments. She also recently co-hosted a new talk show, Healthy Lifestyle with Eraldo on WMCN-TV. She had fun getting some healthy cooking tips while interviewing Dina Deleasa-Gonsar, known as "The Dish it Girl."

We Love Soaps spoke with Satra about her journey, including the lessons learned from her time on soaps.

"Where I am today is absolutely a combination of everything that I've done, all sort of built on each other," she says. "In terms of acting, that's where I started to learn the whole mind-body thing. And the discipline of that life is completely applicable to having your own business. From a mindset perspective, and a mind-body perspective, and a work ethic perspective, it's all been really helpful."

With everyone's busy lives on both coasts, it's not always easy to keep in touch with former co-stars. But earlier this year at the annual Stars & Strikes charity event, Satra reconnected with former Guiding Light actors Michael O'Leary (Rick), Elizabeth Keifer (Blake), Ron Raines (Alan), Grant Aleksander (Phillip), Kim Zimmer (Reva) and Jerry verDorn (Ross).

"It was fun to see everybody again," she says. "And I do speak to Rick [Hearst] every once in a while. I'm sure if I was in L.A. we would see each other more."

Satra is also founder and creator of the new fitness program, Moticise, which combines aerobic exercise with mindset tools, like visioning, affirmations, and goal-setting, to help you tone your body, focus your mind, and create the life you’ve always wanted.

Sonia Satra recently co-hosted Healthy Lifestyle with Eraldo.
"While I was pursuing speaking, I came up with these women's empowerment adventures," she explains. "I've always liked the outdoors, and thought it would be cool to put that together with a life coaching workshop."

Moticise Adventures are a series of workshops, in which Satra pairs a life coaching workshop with an outdoor adventure. A recent one in New York was The Power of Letting Go: Trapeze Adventure. Previous adventures have also included kayaking to the Statue of Liberty and climbing a rock wall.

"When you work out and get your heart up, a protein actually gets released in your brain that that creates new neural pathways," she says. "You can actually rewire your brain."

Satra hosted an event last week at Athleta on the Upper East Side in New York City. Attendees got to meet Satra personally, try out the workout, and shop Athleta fashions.

Satra still loves to act, and appeared in the National Geographic Channel docu-drama American Genius in June.

"Once you get it in your system, you never get it out," she admits.
