Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter Rick Springfield, Emmy, SAG, Tony and Golden Globe Award-nominated actor Oliver Platt  Los Angeles Chargers Offensive Tackle Joe Barksdale, and Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation will be honored at the 22nd Anniversary Erasing the Stigma Leadership Awards on Thursday, April 26, 2018 .

Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services, a nonprofit which has provided free mental health, substance use and suicide prevention services for over 75 years, will confer the honors at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

The event is expected to raise over half a million dollars for Didi Hirsch, which helps thousands of families each year from 11 locations and 100 schools throughout Southern California. Didi Hirsch is also home to the nation's first Suicide Prevention Center, and the only one that offers comprehensive services to people affected by suicide.

Oliver Platt is a multiple Emmy, SAG, Tony and Golden Globe Award-nominated actor. His sensitive and intelligent portrayal of an Emergency Room psychiatrist on NBC’s Chicago Med helps erase stigma and inspires people with mental illness to feel more comfortable seeking treatment. Mr. Platt will receive the2018 Leadership Award for his efforts to raise awareness about mental illness. “Oliver’s sensitive and nuanced portrayal of a compassionate hospital psychiatrist encourages families and people in crisis to consider all resources, including hospital Emergency Departments. He’s not only playing a great part, he’s also helping to erase stigma,” Dr. Curry said.

Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter Rick Springfield is also an accomplished actor, writer and passionate metal health advocate who talks openly about his depression and suicide attempt as a teen. The former General Hospital star will receive the 2018 Beatrice Stern Media Award for his use of media to raise awareness about suicide and to erase the stigma of mental illness. “Rick has used his memoir, songs and the media to spread the message that despair is temporary and mental illness can affect anyone. By sharing that light has always followed his darkest moments, he has offered hope to others who are struggling,” says Didi Hirsch's President/CEO Kita S. Curry, PhD .

Joe Barksdale, who was named the Chargers “2015 Lineman of the Year,” is a star on and off the field. Over the last three seasons, he started 42 of 48 games. Off the field, Barksdale has been working to tackle the stigma of mental illness by talking honestly about his daily struggles with depression and frequent thoughts of suicide. Mr. Barksdale, who suffered in silence for 20 years, will receive the Mental Health Ambassador Award for sharing his experience with teammates and others to encourage men in need to reach out for help. “It’s hard for most men to talk about feeling depressed and suicidal. In reality, the strongest are those who do and who ask for help. Joe’s touchdown is using his story to save lives,” Dr. Curry said.

Together with daughter Lady Gaga, Cynthia Germanotta co-founded Born This Way Foundation to empower youth and advocate against bullying and teen suicide. To achieve these goals, Born This Way Foundation leverages rigorous academic research and authentic partnerships in order to provide young people with kinder communities, improved mental health resources, and more positive environments. Cynthia will accept the 2018 Leadership Award on behalf of Born This Way Foundation. “Didi Hirsch’s staff served as youth mental health counselors during Lady Gaga’s Born Brave Bus Tour in LA in 2014. Today, we are thrilled to honor the organization that Cynthia founded with her daughter Lady Gaga. Born This Way Foundation’s initiatives to empower youth, reduce prejudice and stereotypes and promote self-acceptance have helped create a healthier and kinder community,” Dr. Curry said.

"Today in Soap Opera History" is a collection of the most memorable, interesting and influential events in the history of scripted, serialized programs. From birthdays and anniversaries to scandals and controversies, every day this column celebrates the soap opera in American culture.

On this date in...

1942: The final episode of Frank and Anne Hummert's Orphans of Divorce aired on the Blue Network.

1967: On Dark Shadows, Jason confronted Willie (John Karlen) about his suspicious interest in the Collins family history. Victoria told Elizabeth that she was uncomfortable having Willie at Collinwood. Elizabeth agreed, and told Jason she would give him money to get Willie out of town. Jason took the cash but then couldn't find Willie. As it turned out, Willie was in the Collins family crypt trying to open Naomi Collins's coffin. By accident, Willie found a secret room in the mausoleum. Venturing in, he saw a chained coffin. Willie opened it to investigate the contents, and discovered a horror that would change his life forever.

This was the first appearance of the character of Barnabas Collins. Jonathan Frid, the actor who portrayed Barnabas throughout the remainder of the series, did not appear until the next episode. All we saw of Barnabas was his left hand (portrayed by Tim Gordon).

1978: On Ryan's Hope, after figuring out that Delia (Ilene Kristen) had faked being blind, Pat Ryan (Malcolm Groome) told Delia that their trip was over and they were going home on the next flight. She tried to blame Faith Coleridge but he said it was their marriage that was the problem.

1979: On Guiding Light, Holly Thorpe (Maureen Garrett) was upset when an article about her ex-, Roger (Michael Zaslow), in the Springfield Journal made him seem like a doting father and loving son. Later at Cedars Hospital, Roger couldn't resist striking up a conversation with Bert Bauer (Charita Bauer).

Thanks to Jennifer for sending in the clip above.

1984: On The Edge of Night, Calvin Stoner (Irvin Allen Lee) wanted one more chance to take down the guys who killed Michael Gallagher.

When Allan debuted on indie soap The Bay in 2011, his character (who hailed from Santa Barbara, an homage to the soap he worked on after Days) walked into his daughter's house with a hand full of mail.

1985: John Wesley Shipp debuted on As the World Turns as Douglas Cummings.

1985: On Guiding Light, Beth Raines (Judi Evans) and Lujack Luvonaczek (Vincent Irizaary) made love for the first time.

1996: On As the World Turns, Carly Tenney (Maura West) apologized to Mike Kasnoff (Shawn Christian) for not telling him about the phone call from Rosanna Cabot.

1997: On Another World, Vicky Hudson's (Jensen Buchanan) curiosity about Bobby Reno's (Robert Kelker-Kelly) past continued to build.

2006: Longtime As the World Turns star Henderson Forsythe died at age 88. He starred as Dr. David Stewart in the series from 1960 to 1990. Before ATWT he played roles in From These Roots and The Edge of Night.

2009: On One Life to Live, Starr and Cole vowed to discover the cause of their daughter's death. Roxy gave Stacy Morasco the infamous "Bag of Blood" that was needed to help cure Shane's leukemia. OWN Picks Up Jamey Giddens Drama 'Ambitions' From Will Packer Media

OWN announced today two new series from prolific hit-maker Will Packer (Girls Trip, Straight Outta Compton, Ride Along, Roots) and his Will Packer Media banner: the soapy new drama series Ambitions (written by Daytime Confidential's Jamey Giddens) from global content leader Lionsgate and the unscripted dating series Ready to Love. Packer will serve as executive producer for both series. The new shows mark the first television series to be created under Packer's first-look deal with the network.

The announcement comes as OWN's momentum and diversified programming slate continues to grow. The network recently delivered its highest rated first quarter in four years in the network's key W25-54 demo with year-over-year gains of +6% in W25-54, +15% in African American women and +5% in total viewers. In addition, year-to-date OWN is the #1 cable network for African American women in primetime.

"Will is a creative powerhouse who knows what audiences want," said Erik Logan, president of OWN. "He has an insightful approach to relationships and a keen eye for great storytelling that resonates with viewers across the board. We can't wait to bring these two new series to our viewers."

"Partnering with OWN to bring 'Ambitions' and 'Ready to Love' to their fast-growing lineup of critically acclaimed series is a win-win scenario," said Will Packer, CEO and founder of Will Packer Media. "OWN has been on an incredible streak with its recent slate, and we're looking forward to extending the network's primetime success with these new shows created specifically with the OWN audience in mind."

Ambitions (working title) is a multigenerational family saga centered around one woman who, having recently relocated and intent on revitalizing her marriage, finds herself going head to head with some of the most powerful and deceitful players in the city. Ambitions will begin production later this year and will debut on OWN in 2019. The new series will be produced for OWN by Will Packer Media in association with Lionsgate/Debmar-Mercury. Will Packer is executive producer. Will Packer Media's Sheila Ducksworth also serves as executive producer and writer Jamey Giddens serves as co-executive producer. Giddens was nominated for an Indie Series Award this year for his work writing The Rich and the Ruthless with Victoria Rowell.

Ready to Love (working title), which begins production in Atlanta this spring, will join OWN's popular Saturday night unscripted programming lineup later this year. The dating series will focus on successful men and women of all shapes, sizes and shades, each of whom is looking for lasting love. A unique twist on a typical dating show, "Ready to Love" will specifically bring the perspective of men to the forefront. It will present a unique opportunity to see what men say about dating, when women aren't around. Ready to Love will be produced by Will Packer Media and Lighthearted Entertainment. Will Packer is executive producer. Will Packer Media's Kelly Smith and Lighthearted's Rob LaPlante and Jeff Spangler will also executive produce.

The two new series join OWN's primetime programming slate including the popular dramas Queen Sugar, Greenleaf, The Haves and the Have Nots, and If Loving You is Wrong - four of the top eight original scripted series on ad-supported cable in 2017 for women 25-54. In addition, the network's new drama series from Academy Award winner Tarell Alvin McCraney (Moonlight) will go into production this summer.
