Steve Elmore Dead at 84

Former Broadway star and soap opera actor Steve Elmore has died at age 84 in Boynton Beach, Florida, according to his wife, Carolyn Marcell Elmore. No cause of death was reported.

Born in Niangua, Missouri, Elmore appeared on Broadway nine times, taking on roles as sea captains, cops, lawyers, and once—as a cowboy. He appeared in the ensemble of the Mary Martin musical "Jennie" in 1963, and in the Carol Burnett musical "Fade Out—Fade In" in 1964. He began his rise in 1969 after playing Hennessy/The Captain in the original Off-Broadway company of "Dames at Sea" opposite Bernadette Peters.

In 1970, he originated the role of Paul in the 1970 Stephen Sondheim-George Furth musical "Company. The character Paul is the soon-to-be (or not-so-soon-to-"be) bridegroom of the hyper-nervous Amy; the two sing in the memorable three-part patter song "(Not) Getting Married Today."

After "Company," Elmore worked in TV—mainly in soap operas, dramas, and commercials—and often returned to the stage. He assumed the lead role of lawyer Billy Flynn from Jerry Orbach during the original run of "Chicago," and again stepped into Orbach’s shoes in the role of director Julian Marsh during the original production of "42nd Street.""Chicago" director Bob Fosse also chose Elmore to appear in the ensemble of his 1979 film musical "All That Jazz."

Elmore played Peter Willis in NBC's short-lived daytime soap opera How to Survive a Marriage. The cutting edge soap was created by Anne Howard Bailey, and premiered with a special ninety-minute premiere on January 7, 1974.  When Elmore left to show later that same year, he was replaced by Berkeley Harris, who was married to daytime legend Beverlee McKinsey.

He also had a busy New York nightclub career, appearing regularly at the St. Regis Hotel’s King Cole Room with leading ladies Patrice Munsel, Marni Nixon, and Martha Wright. Lyricist E. Y. Harburg (“Over the Rainbow”) especially admired his respect for the words of songs, and dubbed him “the lyricist’s guardian angel,” says his wife.

His final Broadway appearance came in April 1993 in a two-performance concert celebration of "Company" that reunited the original cast.

In addition to his wife, Elmore is survived by his son, Stuart Elmore; two daughters, Stephana Sherwood and Susan Elmore; his daughter-in-law, Michele Burdette Elmore; and four grandchildren.

A private memorial is planned for New York City in January.

Below, watch Beth Howland with Steve Elmore, Teri Ralston and cast sing "Getting Married Today" from the original broadway cast of Sondheim's "Company" in 1970.

"Today in Soap Opera History" is a collection of the most memorable, interesting and influential events in the history of scripted, serialized programs. From birthdays and anniversaries to scandals and controversies, every day this column celebrates the soap opera in American culture.

On this date in...

1954: Procter & Gamble's popular radio soap opera The Road of Life, created by Irna Phillips in 1937, made its television debut on CBS in the 1:15-1:30 p.m. ET time slot.

Because many CBS affiliates chose to run local news and talk shows during this time, the program never achieved the popularity it might have and aired its last TV episode on July 1, 1955. The radio version of the show continued into the 1959 season when the golden age of the radio soap opera began to wind down.

Written by Charles Gussman, who brought wit and cleverness to his soaps, the story centered on handsome doctor Jim Brent and his wife Jocelyn in the small town of Merrimac. The heroine of a medical drama, Jocelyn would suffer from a number of ailments. A large factor in the story was the relationships between three generations of Brent's and Jocelyn's well to do but highly dysfunctional family, the Overtons.

Donald McLaughlin starred as Dr Brent, and Virginia Dwyer as Jocelyn on both radio and TV. Both would move on to other soap roles: McLaughlin as Chris Hughes on As the World Turns, and Dwyer as matriarch Mary Matthews on Another World.

1957: On The Edge of Night, Hester (Helen Shields) worried Martin wanted a stay-at-home wife and about his jealousy of her male co-worker, Henry Muller.

1965: On Peyton Place, Russ Gehring (David Canary) phoned Marian Fowler's sister looking for her.

1976: On Another World, stalwart Michael Randolph (Lionel Johnston) married scheming Molly Ordway (Rolanda Mendels) at the White Gate hotel in Ogden. Willis Frame (Leon Russom) was the best man, while Angie Perrini (Toni Kalem) served as maid of honor.

Thanks to Scott for sending in the item above.

1979: On As the World Turns, Carol Stallings (Rita Walter) pleaded with Ralph Mitchell (Keith Charles) not to take legal action against her husband, Jay (Dennis Cooney).

1979: On General Hospital, as Lesley Webber (Denise Alexander) struggled to help Monica Quartermaine (Leslie Charleson) give birth to Alan James "A.J." Quartermaine Jr. at home, Monica blurted out that Rick Webber (Chris Robinson) was the father of her baby.

1979: On Guiding Light, Mike Bauer (Don Stewart) informed his daughter, Hope (Elvera Roussel), that he believed her fiance, Alan Spaulding (Christopher Bernau), was involved in serious criminal activity.

Thanks to Jennifer for sending in the clip above.

1983: Actress Leora Dana, who played Sylvie Kosloff on Another World in 1978-79, died at age 60.

1984: On Search for Tomorrow, Lloyd (Peter Haskell) obtained a copy of Rebecca's birth certificate and fingerprints.

1984:The Edge of Night cast and crew taped the show's final episode, which aired on December 28.

Ann Williams
1985: Actress Ann Williams died at age 49 after a battle with cancer. Her daytime credits included stints on The Doctors as the first Dr. Maggie Fielding, and on The Edge of Night as television station owner, Margo Huntington Dorn. Her most memorable character was Eunice Gardner Wyatt on Search for Tomorrow (1966–1976), famously shot by Morgan Fairchild's Jennifer.

Her final soap roles were alcoholic June Slater on Loving and Lucy in Guiding Light, a blind woman that befriended Beth Raines (Judi Evans) in the clip below.

Williams left behind four kids in her real life who had a story as fascinating as their mother's characters. Read it here.

1985: On Dallas, J.R. Ewing (Larry Hagman) convinced his ex-wife, Sue Ellen (Linda Gray), to move back to Southfork, which meant she gave up her custody of their son, John Ross. Note: This story ended up being a dream after Bobby turned up alive in Pam's shower in the season finale.

1991: On All My Children, Erica Kane (Susan Lucci) and Adam Chandler (David Canary) were married, again.

1993: Former One Life to Live and Loving casting director Bobby Hoffman died at age 71.

2001: On The Bold and the Beautiful, Rick (Justin Torkildsen) promised Brooke (Katherine Kelly Lang) she was not going to regret letting letting him move in with Amber.

2007: On Guiding Light, Doris Wolfe (Orlagh Cassidy) was down after losing the Springfield mayoral election to Buzz Cooper.

2008: British soap actress Kathy Staff (Doris Luke, Crossroads; Vera Hopkins, Coronation Street; Winnie Purvis, Emmerdale Farm) died at age 80.

"Today in Soap Opera History" is a collection of the most memorable, interesting and influential events in the history of scripted, serialized programs. From birthdays and anniversaries to scandals and controversies, every day this column celebrates the soap opera in American culture.

On this date in...

1957: On The Edge of Night, Peter Dalton (Stephen Elliott) refused Mike Karr's (John Larkin) resignation then argued that his leaving would be a disservice to the public.

1966: ABC aired the final episode of daytime soap opera A Time For Us (formerly A Flame in the Wind), originally created by Raphael Hayes and Joseph Hardy. Jane Elliot, Conard Fowkes and Margaret Ladd were among the stars during the series run from December 28, 1964 to December 16, 1966.

1968: David Selby debuted on Dark Shadows as Quentin Collins. Terry Crawford also aired for the first time as Beth Chavez.

In the episode, Amy Jennings had moved into Collinwood, with Liz hoping she'll be a playmate and good influence on young David. But while playing in the west wing, the children discovered a secret room containing the malevolent spirits of Quentin Collins and Beth Chavez. Quickly putting the children under his power, Quentin ordered them to move his skeleton from the room and bury it in the woods. He then told them that they're to systematically kill members of the family. In the meantime, Liz told Roger that she's worried about Vicky, who's been despondent since the disappearance of Jeff Clark. As the episode ended, David acted on Quentin's marching orders by stringing a wire across the grand staircase. When Amy told Roger that she heard a prowler near the main door, he subsequently investigated and took the fall Quentin intended for him.

1976: On Ryan's Hope, Maeve and Johnny Ryan's daughter, Kathleen (Nancy Reardon), arrived with her children. Later, Mary (Kate Mulgrew) reads Delia's note, addressed to the family.

1977: On Another World, John Randolph (Michael M. Ryan) and Evan Webster's (Barry Jenner) dispute evolved into a struggle over a gun. Evan was shot dead.

Thanks to Scott for sending in the item above. He adds the following details:

Note: This scene was replayed at the beginning of Monday, December 19. AW had a history of replaying especially dramatic "climax" moments the day (or Monday) after they originally aired, even lengthy ones like December 16. Ira Cirker was often the director of the most intense episodes.

Context: John Randolph had ended his long-term marriage to Pat (Beverly Penberthy) and wed duplicitous Olive Gordon (Jennifer Leak) in March 1977. At Olive's insistence, the couple began building an elaborate new house designed by slithery architect Evan Webster. Soon Evan and Olive were having a torrid, adulterous affair. The Dec.16-19 shooting took place at the newly-finished house. John was in shock after the event; it was only after Olive arrived home and discovered Evan's body that John realized his wife's deception. Her hysterical reaction ("You killed him!""Evan..") pushing her husband away in rage & disgust) told John the truth.

Aftermath: John had a breakdown, became mute and was psychiatrically hospitalized. Eventually, he recovered and was cleared of charges. He and Olive divorced, but she ironically would cause his death in March 1979 (when he became trapped in a fire she set to kill Alice).

Jennifer Leak was an outstanding (and since unsung) soap villainess in 1977. Long-term AW viewers will remember her doe-eyed act with John and tormenting Alice (by denying Ray a divorce) and blackmailing Molly Ordway to do her bidding ("Do you want to go back to the cows & pigs in Chadwell?") Olive came to Bay City as Raymond Gordon's (Ted Shackelford) estranged wife. The neglectful mother of two sons, Olive enticed her way in to John Randolph's office and life. She drove the final nail into the Randolph marriage by ingratiating herself with John's daughter, Marianne. All niceties stopped on her wedding day to John.

1983: On Days of our Lives, Chris Kositchek (Josh Taylor) let Hope Williams (Kristian Alfonso) leave work early for her date night with Bo Brady (Peter Reckell). Unfortunately, Bo was helping his brother, Roman (Wayne Northrop), and didn't show up.

1983: On General Hospital, Luke Spencer (Anthony Geary) held a press conference to make a statement about the death of Stavros Cassadine.

1983: Lori Loughlin made her final appearance as Jody Travis on The Edge of Night. Jody left to attend Wellington College.

Thanks to Shane for sending in the item above.

1983: On Falcon Crest, Chase Gioberti (Robert Foxworth) found a clause in his grandfather's will that gave him the legal right to get rid of Angela Channing from Falcon Crest.

1985: On Days of our Lives, Jennifer Horton (Melissa Reeves, then Melissa Brennan) was attacked at the hospital.

1986: Douglas Lambert (Eddie Weeks on General Hospital) died of complications due to the AIDS virus at age 50.

1986: On All My Children, Palmer Cortlandt (James Mitchell) accused Adam Chandler (David Canary) of having a big hand in Natalie Hunter's misfortune. Meanwhile, Cliff Warner (Peter Bergman) surprised his ex-wife, Nina (Taylor Miller), with a room full of flowers, and told her he wanted to marry her and be a family again.

1986: On Capitol, Kelly Harper (Jess Walton) received a surprise visit from her son, Scotty (Malachi Pearson).

1986: On Santa Barbara, Kirk Cranston doused Eden Capwell (Marcy Walker) and Cruz Castillo (A Martinez) with gasoline. Cruz broke free and picked up a chair to battle Kirk, who was holding a sword. Meanwhile, Brian Bradford (Kyle Secor) discovered Courtney Capwell (Julia Campbell) was Madeline Laurent's killer.

1988: On The Bold and the Beautiful, the Logan sisters ("the three most fabulous girls in the Valley") prepared for Brooke's (Katherine Kelly Lang) dinner with Ridge Forrester (Ronn Moss) at their house.

1996: On Another World, Jake McKinnon (Tom Eplin) made plans to steal the Lassiter Christmas tree, knowing it would have special meaning to Vicky Hudson (Jensen Buchanan).

2003: Madlyn Rhue, who played Daphne DiMera in Days of our Lives, died at age 68.

2004: ABC aired the 9,000th episode of All My Children. "Part of it is the script is different every day," Susan Lucci (Erica Kane) told the Associated Press about how the show had stayed fresh. "You have no choice. It's hot off the presses."

2005: John Spencer, who played Leo McGarry in The West Wing, died four days before his 59th birthday. The West Wing wrote Leo's death into the show.

2011: Dan Frazer, who played Lt. Dan McCloskey in As the World Turns for many years, died at age 90.
