Is Guy Wilson leaving Days of our Lives?
Is Will Horton going to be one of the victim's in Days' upcoming murder mystery story?

Daniel Morgan's new memoir "Last Stage Manager Standing" recounts 50 years in TV, including Search for Tomorrow
In his half-century working as a stage manager for CBS, ABC and NBC, Daniel Morgan had his share of unusual tasks. While working on the soap opera Search for Tomorrow in the 1970s, a producer told Morgan his job for the day was to make sure the show's star, Morgan Fairchild (who played Jennifer Pace), was wearing a bra.

"I guess the day or week before, she hadn't been wearing one and there were problems with Standards and Practices," Morgan wrote. He then went into her dressing room and started talking to her about cats "as a pretext to look down her blouse.

"She was wearing a sheer something," he wrote. "But she was wearing something."

The Bold and the Beautiful's Ashleigh Brewer on Ivy's failed romance with Liam
"It definitely got to the point where I'd read the script and my heart would break for her a little bit," says the actress of her alter ego's rough go of things with Liam, who, in the eyes of many fans, disrespected the brunette by tossing her aside in favor of her overtly sexy cousin.

General Hospital star Ryan Paevey on the road to recovery
After seriously injuring his hand in a motorcycle accident, Ryan Paevey (Nathan) tells Soaps In Depth that he's well on his way to a full recovery. "My doc is impressed with how quickly my tissue has mended," the actor reports. "All the 'road rash' is gone. The bones have fused, and my body's not fighting the metal. The surgical side is fine."

However, there are still a few obstacles to overcome. "My range of motion is still really limited," he confides. "It'll probably be a while before I'm on the bike or in the gym again."

Generations alum Kelly Rutherford refuses to hand children back to father
The Gossip Girl star spent the summer with her two children - Hermes and Helena - in New York, and was due to fly them back to Monaco on Thursday, but she declared on Friday in a statement that she is refusing.

"These past three years waiting for my children to come home have been very difficult. My children were forced to leave the United states in 2012 when they were only 2 and 5 years old," Rutherford says in a statement. "In May, a judge in California gave me sole custody and brought them home. I am immensely grateful and overjoyed to have them back. Since May, however, the court proceedings have been confusing."

All My Children star Debbi Morgan shines in one-woman show
In her one-woman show, “The Monkey on My Back,” Morgan opens up about her own life’s journey, from fear and abuse to empowerment and self-love.

The proverbial “monkey on my back” refers to the cycle of physical and emotional abuse that her grandmother and her mother went through. That cycle continued in Morgan’s own relationships, starting with the drug-dealing boyfriend of her youth and continuing through four marriages, with her fourth marriage to Jeffrey Winston being the charm.

'General Hospital' Star Maurice Benard Jokes "We Got Rid of the Writer"

Maurice Benard speaking to fans during the GH Fan Club Weekend event
he co-hosted with Chad Duell and Bryan Craig.
Over the past few days, General Hospital has been celebrating its loyal viewers during the show's annual Fan Club Weekend, with a luncheon and wall-to-wall events featuring much of the cast. While addressing a group of fans at the "Sonny & Sons" event, Emmy winner Maurice Benard (Sonny Corinthos) shared his feelings about the recent departure of head writer Ron Carlivati, who was replaced by Shelly Altman and Jean Passanante, and offered new enthusiasm for what's coming up.

"We got rid of the writer," Benard said jokingly to the audience.

"I'm not one to bash," Benard continued, "but the thing with him was, obviously, he wasn't a fan of mine...and that's a stupid thing..."

The crowd laughed and cheered him on as he continued talking.

"The good news is, moving forward...there's been some great stuff," he teased. "So if you guys have any doubt about what's going to happen, I can tell you right now that the future looks so promising. This is the first time in I can't tell you how long that I can't wait to go to work, and work."

"An actor cay say whatever they want, people can say whatever they want, but it's...you guys are the one that makes things happen, and that's not a lie. If the ratings go down, then things have to happen. So you're the most important ones in reality. If you all don't like stuff, and it keeps going on forever and you don't like it...eventually, shit gets fixed."

Watch Benard talk with the fans in the video below:

Walford revitalized: EastEnders to introduce brand new areas when show's set is upgraded
BBC chiefs made the decision to rebuild the EastEnders set to help the show cope better with the demands of high definition television. Changes will include making the set 20% bigger and rebuilding the Albert Square houses with real bricks to ensure that they look more realistic on screen.

Albert Square, which has resided in London's Elstee studios since the soap launched in 1985, faces "demolition" under the extravagant plans to make way for Walford's new high street loaded with shops, a new underground station and houses.

Michael Easton shares some favorite General Hospital memories
"I’ll take away many fond memories. The whole cast is top flight and it’s hard to single people out as I’ll just be forgetting someone. If pressed I would say I liked initially coming on the show and how they made John McBain, Anna’s protégé. Finola [Hughes] brings class to everything she does and I was very fond of working with her. It was pleasure working with Kelly [Monaco], Steve [Burton], Tony [Geary], Maurice [Benard] and Tristan [Rogers] in that story as well. Dom [Zamprogna] was a cool partner to have in my short time with the PCPD."

Ted Danson recalls the "nightmare" of working in daytime soap operas
Danson started with TV commercials and landed an Aramis cologne ad. He then graduated to soaps — shows like Somerset and The Doctors. Danson says it still haunts him to this day.

"It was the nightmare, you know. The actor's nightmare, doing a soap opera," he says. "You got the lines the night before, there was nothing natural about them, they were all kind of repetitive. And back then, you couldn't stop tape. A wall could fall, and you did not stop."

In The Doctors, Danson was cast as Mitch Pierson, a calm, cool doctor who breaks news to a family that their daughter has a terminal illness.

But Danson's first day on set was the opposite of calm and cool. Worried about the rigors of taping a soap opera, he had a nervous breakdown.

"I called a friend and he said, 'Take a Valium,'" Danson says. "So I took a Valium, and Valium and I don't work very well together. So I was pouring sheets of sweat, trying to be cool and reassure this family who's looking at me like, 'Dear God, I hope this actor makes it.'"

He wasn't remembering his lines so he was relying on the cue cards. That is, until the guy holding his cue card dropped it.

"It wafted like a paper airplane right onto my lap," Danson says.

It was out of frame, so they kept rolling. Danson, drenched in sweat and looking straight down at his lines, just kept going.

"Really scary stuff," he says. "Clearly I was not a huge success. Thumb through the soap opera magazines, you will not find me."

Danson lasted two episodes on The Doctors.

Dynasty star Emma Samms: I want to do Strictly Come Dancing
Samms has revealed she would love to take part in Strictly Come Dancing, but she fears her appearance on Tumble may have put her out of the running.

The 54-year-old actress – who played Fallon Carrington Colby in the '80s soap opera – took part in the BBC gymnastics reality show in 2014, and admitted she was shocked that producers got away with putting celebrities in jeopardy by performing such dangerous stunts on live television.

Rex Smith recalls his busy As the World Turns days
"I was the number one guy for two years on As the World Turns," says Smith, who played Darryl Crawford on ATWT. "And I was doing Broadway. I was doing the soap opera and ‘Grand Hotel’ at night, so I was doing eight shows a week plus five soap opera shows a week.”

Smith will appear in the Barn Theatre’s production of “Hands On a Hardbody” beginning Tuesday.

The Good Wife season premiere spoilers
Alicia attempts to revive her struggling law career by once again starting her own law firm, this time with the assistance of Jason Crouse (new cast member Jeffrey Dean Morgan), a calm, experienced investigator whom she hires. Also, to help with his Presidential campaign, Peter engages Willa Eastman (Margo Martindale, recurring), a national strategist who hides her intelligence and cunning under a fake, folksy charm, creating an interesting dynamic with Eli in the process. In addition, Cush Jumbo joins the cast as attorney Lucca Quinn.

A Complete, Concise Yearly History of TV Soap Operas

The Soap Box
Vol. III No. 10 September 1978
by John Genovese

The history of daytime television series is too long and varied to be fully detailed in an article of this size. However, in this issue we are proud to present a survey of every network serial that appeared on television. This is one of the most comprehensive studies of broadcasting flops (as well as successes) available.

1947
Remember the old DuMont network from the early days of television? Although it's long gone, it gave us the first considerable effort in the visual medium on a network basis. It was A Woman to Remember, which bumped along for about two years and starred Patricia Wheel as--oddly enough--a soap opera star. Supporting cast members included Joan Castle, John Raby, Frank Thomas Jr., and Ruth McDevitt. The writer was John Haggart and the producer was Bob Steele.

EDITOR'S NOTE: The exact dates A Woman to Remember aired are not clear, with inconsistency among the various research sources. Most list the show as airing for two months in 1949.  Faraway Hill had premiered on the DuMont network in 1946.

1949
Established soap spinner Irna Phillips will certainly not be best remembered for her NBC creation called These Are My Children, which premiered January 31, 1949, and ran a few short months. Alma Platt played the mother of five children, played respectively by Jane Brooksmith, George Kluge, Martha McCain, Joan Alt and Eloise Kummer.

1950
Procter & Gamble Productions tried and failed with The First Hundred Years, a schmaltzy tale of married life against the backdrop of New York City. James Lydon and Olive Stacey (the latter soon replaced by Anne Sargent) starred as newlyweds Chris and Connie Thayer. The well-meaning in-laws were played by Don Tobin, Valerie Cossart, Robert Armstrong and Nana Bryant. Other roles were filled by such eventual soap biggies as Larry Haines (Stu Bergman, Search for Tomorrow), Nat Polen (Dr. Jim Craig, One Life to Live), Charles Baxter, and Nancy Malone. A CBS offering which lasted from December 4, 1950 to June 27, 1952, it was written by Jean Holloway and directed by veteran Gloria Monty; the latter currently produces General Hospital.

1951
Ros Twohey starred as Millie Flagel on Hawkins Falls.
This was the year in which television soaps were finally put on the map. NBC premiered Miss Susan (later entitled Martinsville, U.S.A.), which starred crippled actress Susan Peters as attorney Susan Martin, with support from Katherine Grill, Natalie Priest, Robert McQueeny and John Lorimer. After protests that the story was capitalizing on the star's disability, the show was yanked in 1952.

NBC had far more success with the charming Hawkins Falls, created by Roy Winsor and Doug Johnson, and presented in Chicago with a phenomenal budget. Its large cast of "townspeople" included Frank Dane, Bernadine Flynn, Ros Twohey, Hope Summers and Barbara Berjer (currently Barbara Thorpe of Guiding Light). Produced and directed by Ben Park, it ran four years.

Then on September 3 of that year, CBS jumped on the bandwagon again with two new offerings. The first, The Egg and I, featured Pat Kirkland and Frank Craven in a serial adaptation of Betty's McDonald's book. Egg went rotten on August 1, 1952.

The other serial to make its appearance that day was a Procter & Gamble Production called Search for Tomorrow, created by Roy Winsor and headlining a B-movie starlet named Mary Stuart in the central role of beleaguered housewife Joanne Barron. Need we say that this became the longest-running serial on television, and that the B-movie starlet we mentioned is now Mary, Queen of Soaps?

Love of Life starred Peggy McCay and Jean McBridge
as sisters Vanessa and Meg.
Three weeks later, on September 24, the prolific and gifted Roy Winsor gave us still another gem: Love of Life, which was then boasting Peggy McCay as guardian of goodness Vanessa Dale, Jean McBride as her devilish sister Meg, and Jane Rose as their harried mother, Sarah. Although the stars have changed, the key director remains Larry Auerbach since the very first episode.

1952
CBS, by now on top, bolstered its lead when it brought that fifteen-year-old radio warhorse, The Guiding Light, to television. Created and written by Irna Phillips for Procter & Gamble, those classic episodes in the life of the Bauer family were graced by Jone Allison as Meta Bauer Roberts, Herb Nelson as newspaperman Joe Roberts, Lyle Sudrow as Bill Bauer, Theo Goetz as Papa Bauer, and, of course, Charita Bauer, who remains as Bertha Bauer. The radio version wasn't dropped until 1956, but the TV serial began June 30, 1952.

NBC floundered further with a fly-by-night venture called The House in the Garden (later, Fairmeadows, U.S.A.), which had a family nucleus. Howard St. John and Ruth Matteson played the parents.

1953
NBC, ready to try anything, took a continuing routine on Kate Smith's variety program and turned it into a serial which ran two years. The World of Mr. Sweeney starred Charles Ruggles as general store owner Cicero P. Sweeney, with Glenn Walker (later Michael Bauer on Guiding Light) as his little grandson, Kippie. Kippie's mother was played by an actress who, three years later, would go on to become the mother of the soap opera airwaves: Helen Wagner, the beloved Nancy Hughes of As the World Turns.

On July 6 of that year, NBC tried another marital weeper known as The Bennetts, with Don Gibson and Nancy Bennett. Chicago-based, it ended January 8, 1954.

On August 3, NBC pressed on with two more forgotten failures. One was Follow Your Heart, created by radio writer Elaine Sterne Carrington, who attempted to duplicate her audio hit, When A Girl Marries, using different character names. The lucky actors in this boffo attraction included Sallie Brophy as Julie Fielding, Nancy Sheridan, Anne Seymour (currently Beatrice Hewitt on General Hospital), and John Seymour. In January of 1954, it was put out of its misery.

Faring a bit better was Three Steps to Heaven, which went to hell on December 31, 1954, after a stay of execution involving such names as Phyllis Hill (ex-Mrs. Dawson, General Hospital), Kathleen Maguire (Anna Craig, One Life to Live), Walter Brooke (Dr. Edward Copeland, General Hospital), and Lori March (ex-Valerie Ames Northcote, Secret Storm). It was created by Irving Vendig, who was still writing Search for Tomorrow at the time, and directed by Gordon Rigsby, who currently plays Dean Blackford on Guiding Light and who has directed several other serials.

CBS had an almost-hit with Valiant Lady, which aired at noon and was sponsored by Toni and General Mills. Nancy Coleman (later Flora Campbell) starred as Helen Emerson, widow of an inventor and mother of three children, who found a source of income in the lock washer her husband had devised. The prestigious cast included James Kirkwood Jr., Sue Randall, Earl Hammond, Dolores Sutton, Helen Wagner, Jerome Cowan, Martin Balsam, Margaret Hamilton, Abby Lewis, and Lawrence Weber (Barney Dancy, The Doctors). It was created by Allan Chase, produced by Leonard Blair, and directed by Ted Corday, Herb Kenwith and Ira Cirker--all of them were among the bigger names in serial production. This "valiant" effort began on October 12, 1953 and ended August 16, 1957.

Ricky Schroder
Award winning country artist Jennifer Nettles as well as multi-award nominees Gerald McRaney and Ricky Schroder, a former Golden Globe winner, have been added to the cast of the upcoming NBC film Dolly Parton's Coat of Many Colors.

Dolly Parton's Coat of Many Colors is based on the inspiring true story of living legend Dolly Parton’s remarkable upbringing. This once-in-a-lifetime movie special takes place inside the tight-knit Parton family as they struggle to overcome devastating tragedy and discover the healing power of love, faith, and a raggedy patchwork coat that helped make Parton who she is today.

The film is set in the Tennessee Great Smokey Mountains in 1955. It is neither a biopic nor musical about Dolly’s whole life and performing career, but rather a family-oriented faith-based story about the incidents in her and her family’s life around the time she was 9 years old.

Nettles, who will play Parton’s mother, Avie Lee Parton, has become one of the most popular singer-songwriters in music today. As the lead singer of the duo Sugarland, Nettles has sold more than 22 million albums, achieved eight #1 singles and has won numerous awards, including trophies from the Grammys, AMAs, ACM Awards, CMT Music Awards and CMA Awards. In addition, Nettles debuted her first solo album in 2014 which went to #1 on the country charts.

Adding theater actress to her already impressive resume, Nettles made her Broadway debut in February as Roxy Hart in the Tony Award-winning musical “Chicago.”

The career of McRaney, who will play Grandpa Jake Owens, includes roles in several critically acclaimed television dramas — Deadwood, Southland and House of Cards— and he currently co-stars on the Western series Longmire. He will also co-star on the upcoming TNT series Agent X. McRaney was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award as part of the cast for both Deadwood and House of Cards.

Schroder, who portrays Dolly’s father, Lee Parton, has had a lengthy career dating back to when the actor was 9 years old and won a Golden Globe for his role in the heartfelt boxing film The Champ. Schroder was SAG nominated both individually and as a member of the cast of the Emmy Award-winning police drama NYPD Blue and had a co-starring role in the Emmy-winning drama 24.  He is best known by some from his childhood role in Silver Spoons.

As previously announced, The Young and the Restless actress Alyvia Lind will portray 9-year-old Dolly Parton. Alyvia most recently had a role in the Lifetime movie spoof A Deadly Adoption, with Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig. She has also appeared in Revenge, Masters of Sex and Transparent.

Dolly Parton's Coat of Many Colors is written by Pamela K. Long (Guiding Light, Texas, Santa Barbara). She executive produces with Sam Haskell and Dolly Parton. The film is a production of Magnolia Hill Entertainment and DP Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.

GLAAD talks to The Bold and the Beautiful stars Karla Mosley and Jacob Young about trans storyline
"As a woman of color I understand how important it is that we be given the opportunity to write and tell our own stories," says Mosley (Maya Avant). "One of the first things I had to do was acknowledge my own privilege as a cisgender person to be in the position to play this role. I felt it was important that our show include trans actors in this story line and I'm happy to see that's happened. I'm also excited to see more trans actors and stories starting to be included in TV & Film."

"His pull is stronger to her than any business or any other relationship," adds Young (Rick Forrester). "As far as this role affecting me personally. It absolutely has, I have always believed in equal rights. I have and always and will be a strong advocate for the transgender community."

Michael Hawkins and Christian Slater
After nine years, Ryan's Hope alum Christian Slater speaks with his father, original Ryan's Hope star Michael Hawkins
Christian Slater (D.J. LaSalle on Ryan's Hope) recently opened up about mending his relationship with his father, actor Michael Hawkins (original Frank Ryan), after an estrangement that lasted for years.

The actor had a candid discussion with his Nymphomaniac director Lars von Trier in the June-July issue of Interview magazine, in which he said that he has recently reconciled with his dad, now 79, a "manic-depressive schizophrenic."

"He's always had trouble – he was a fantastic actor and extraordinarily charismatic and very, very good looking, but he had a really difficult time working with directors, collaborating with people," Slater told the director, also noting that his mother was his father's agent.

Slater also reflected on his first TV role. My mother became a casting director and she cast me in a soap opera called One Life to Live. I was, like, 8 years old, playing a kid who had hurt himself on a skateboard. I had, like, three lines. I did the lines and everybody in the studio applauded—I was immediately hooked after that. I was like, "This is the life for me."

Marvin Gaye's son plans to sue Empire for stealing his idea
Marvin Gaye III claims he registered a treatment on a show called Diamonds & Ballads with the Writers Guild of America back in 2010. Gaye says the treatment describes a family in the music business -- "a music based 'black' and 'hip' version of Dynasty ... with a little Sopranos." Gaye shopped the treatment around to TV execs and said it was loosely based on the lives of his legendary family and the Berry Gordy family.

Gaye insists the people in the industry with whom Lee Daniel's associates received emails pitching his treatment. Gaye feels Daniels unwittingly fessed up in 2014 after Empire hit big, when he said, "I wanted to make a black Dynasty." He also said it was similar to The Sopranos.

Days of our Lives casting new role: Summer
Days is seeking a Caucasian woman in her early 40s to play the short-term, contract role of Summer. She is described as a passionate loner who has been in and out of institutions and is a small-time thief. The show is asking for experienced actors only, names preferred, to begin taping at the end of the month.

Days of our Lives star Jen Lilley is a fan of Jeff Striker's new novel, "The Last Recruit"
Lilley (Theresa Donovan) said, “Jeff’s tale weaves shreds of truth into fiction, making for a strong and compelling read … in fact, the storyline is compelling enough to cause even the most serious [of] readers to become immersed in the story.”

One Life to Live alum John Brotherton joins Netflix's Fuller House
Brotherton, who played Jared Banks on OLTL, tweeted the news: "New gig 😎 So honored, so pumped! #FullerHouse #TGIF #90s #blessings 🙏🏻"

Arrow star Stephen Amell gets a match at WWE SummerSlam after challenging Stardust in the ring
Stephen Amell did not fail WWE Monday Night Raw fans when the Arrow star appeared on this week’s episode. But it looks like viewers will have to wait a couple of weeks before the main event.

Amell was standing off to the side when Stardust interrupted a match between Neville and King Barrett. But winning for Stardust had little to do with the match going on – once he spotted Amell, Stardust made his way toward the star and incited a quick throwdown. Watch the brawl above to see Amell wail on Stardust until security gets in the way.

Watch below:

Guiding Light and The West Wing alum Allison Janney loved played Niblett on the summer's breakout web hit Break a Hip
For Janney, there was absolutely no hesitation when she was asked to join in on the fun with the cast of Break a Hip. "I wanted to be a part of it because Cam [Watson], who has been a friend of mine for a very long time, is an extraordinary actor and director and writer and friend and I would do anything for him," she shared. "I was really happy when he told me he was writing this part for me: Niblett. I was like, 'Niblett?! What kind of name is that?!'

'Pretty Little Liars' Finally Reveals Identify of "A" and It's an 'As the World Turns' Alum

During Tuesday's season six summer finale, Pretty Little Liars finally unmasked "A", and it was a familiar face to As the World Turns fans.

Warning: Spoilers ahead if you haven't watched!

Vanessa Ray played CeCe Drake on Pretty Little Liars.
"A" is Charles DiLaurentis, who later transitioned to become Charlotte DiLaurentis, whom we've known for years as CeCe Drake. CeCe is played by actress Vanessa Ray, who starred on CBS daytime soap opera As the World Turns as Teri Ciccone.

Many fans voiced their displeasure with the reveal on Twitter.

PLL executive producer Marlene King spoke with ET about what's ahead.

"There's a lot of great stuff," she teased. "It has been so much fun to make this five-year time jump and so much fun especially this season -- the season that will premiere in January. We’re kind of finding out together who these girls are five years later. Because it's a mid-season for us in the [writers'] room, it's not something that we talked about for months and months and months. We knew where they were going to go to school, we knew where they were going to be in their personal lives but as we bring them back to Rosewood, there's an even that happens that brings them all back together. It's just kind of fun exploring who they are they and they're having fun exploring their characters too."

King also spoke with EW.com to clarify many of the show's mysteries.
