Carol Lynley Dead at 77

Carol Lynley, best known for the 1972 disaster movie The Poseidon Adventure, died on September 4. She was 77.

The actress, who was born in New York City, died “peacefully in her sleep” at her Pacific Palisades home.

Her daughter, Jill Selsman, said in a statement the actress “loved the industry and she was equally a great fan of the movies.”

“She loved working in film as much as she loved going to the movies. I saw everything as a child with her,” Selsman, a director, said of her mother’s love for film and television. “She was curious about the world around her, loved to spend time with interesting people, of all stripes and was generally a very peaceful person. Very live and let live.”

Lynley was also a “life-long fitness person” and a yoga practitioner since the 1970s “when everyone still made fun of it,” Selsman said of her mother.

“She loved to dance, going to the ballet, seeing anything on Broadway. I basically lived at Lincoln Center as a child because of her,” Selsman said. “She had an easy approach to life and always took the good with the bad. She was a bon vivant. There really was no situation that couldn’t be improved or ignored because there really was so much fun to be had, why dwell on things you can’t change.”

“Which is what I think she’s doing now. Clearly, you can’t change death, but if there is a world beyond, she’s dancing with her great friend Fred Astaire and enjoying her new life as much as she enjoyed her previous one,” Selsman said.

Lynley began her career as a child model and later pursued acting after appearing on the 1957 cover of LIFE magazine at the age of 15.

The actress turned heads in the controversial 1959 drama Blue Denim in which she and costar Brandon deWilde play two teenagers who deal with an unwanted pregnancy and pursue abortion, which was illegal at the time.

Lynley received her first Golden Globe nomination for most promising newcomer.

She followed that role with parts in Return to Peyton Place, Under the Yum Yum Tree, Bunny Lake Is Missing, The Pleasure Seekers, The Cardinal and The Poseidon Adventure.

She performed the Oscar-winning song “The Morning After” in The Poseidon Adventure (however, her singing voice was dubbed over by Renee Armand).

In 1960, Lynley married publicist Michael Selsman. The two had one child, daughter Jill, before divorcing in 1964.

A year later, the actress posed nude for Playboy.

While Lynley didn’t live the wild Hollywood life of so many of her contemporaries, she did have an 18-year, on-again, off-again relationship with British talk show host David Frost.

The actress shied away from commenting on their relationship, but did say she was in a period of “transition.”

“I’m playing middle-aged parts, which is a good idea!” she said. “Eventually, I want to make the next transition, to where I’m playing snowy-haired old ladies, my Helen Hayes period.”

Lynley’s last film role was in Sylvester Stallone’s 2006 short-film Vic, which was co-written and directed by Stallone’s late son, Sage.

Check out Lynley's guest appearance on an episode of Another World from September 1, 1989 below.

"Today in Soap Opera History" is a collection of the most memorable, interesting and influential events in the history of scripted, serialized programs. From birthdays and anniversaries to scandals and controversies, every day this column celebrates the soap opera in American culture.

On this date in...

1938: Radio soap opera Life Can Be Beautiful premiered on CBS, starting a successful 16-year run. Life Can Be Beautiful quickly became known to radio insiders by its initials, and widely referred to as "Elsie Beebe." It was the story of Carol Conrad (Alice Reinheart, and later Teri Keane), a disadvantaged child who--still in her teens--ran into the Slightly Read Bookshop seeking shelter and a hiding place from Gyp Mendoza (Waldemar Kappel, and later Paul Stewart), the town racketeer. The kindly old book dealer, Papa David Solomon (Ralph Locke), would soon become one of the great philosophers of daytime radio. Carol became "Chichi" and was installed on a pallet in the back room as the old man's ward. Fifteen years later, she was still there. The show was billed as "an inspiring message of faith drawn from life."

1960: On Search for Tomorrow, after talking things over with Joanne (Mary Stuart), Alison (Anne Pearson) endured an uncomfortable evening with her in-laws, the Metcalfs, who came over for dinner.

1967: CBS broadcast The Edge of Night in color for the first time.

1967: Marcella Martin aired for the final time as Flo Murray on Another World. Flo had killed Danny Fargo. Ralph Oliver also aired for the last time that day as Charlie Rushinberger.

1980: On General Hospital, Alan (Stuart Damon) told Monica (Leslie Charleson) she could leave but she wasn't taking the baby. "You've never been a bargain as a wife," Alan told her, "but let's see how you do as a mother."

1983: On Ryan's Hope, Jill (Nancy Addison) felt pangs of jealousy when she saw Frank (Geoffrey Pierson) with Rae (Louise Shaffer).

1985: On Santa Barbara, Assistant District Attorney Felicia Dalton (Phylicia Rashad, then known as Phylicia Allen Ayers) questioned Ted Capwell (Todd McKee) about the death of Steve Bassett. Joel Crothers (playing attorney Jack Lee) made his final television appearance before he passed away on November 6, 1985.

1989: On As the World Turns, Paul Stenbeck (Andrew Kavovit) walked in on his father, James (Anthony Hererra), attacking Emily Stewart (Melanie Smith) and shot him three times.

1989: On Guiding Light, Phillip (Grant Aleksander) told Lillian (Tina Sloan) he thought Beth could still be alive. Lillian she angrily refused to believe him.

1992: Irving Allen Lee, who played Calvin Stoner in The Edge of Night and Evan Cooper on Ryan's Hope, passed away at age 43. He died of AIDS-related lymphoma, according to his companion, John Uehlein.

1994: Marie-Alise Recasner debuted as Lynn Burke in Days of our Lives.

1996:Dallas executive producer Leonard Katzman died at age 69.

2002: MTV aired the final episode of Undressed, which gave viewers "a peek behind closed doors at the intricacies of modern relationships."

2006: On One Life to Live, Jessica (Bree Williamson) was integrated with Tess after her session with Dr. Jamison. She later told Nash (Forbes March) that she still felt Tess's feelings for him.

2006: MyNetworkTV, an upstart network launched by News Corporation, launched two with nightly serials. After the moderate success of Desire and Fashion House, ratings began to decline. The second pair of soaps, Wicked Wicked Games and Watch Over Me had decent ratings but not as successful as the debut telenovelas. By the time the third batch, American Heiress and Saints and Sinners, were shown, the ratings were disastrous and the format was phased out.

2008: On Hollyoaks, while Craig Dean (Guy Burnett) made a last ditch effort to win back ex-lover, John Paul McQueen (James Sutton), Niall Rafferty (Barry Sloane) was beginning his final revenge plot against the entire McQueen family. First up, Niall would drug and kill John Paul's fiancé, Kieron Hobbs (Jake Hendriks), and in doing so, would maneuver to have the ex-priest "hear his confession" before making his murder look like a suicide, thereby leaving John Paul wracked with guilt, thinking he was responsible for Kieron's death.

"Today in Soap Opera History" is a collection of the most memorable, interesting and influential events in the history of scripted, serialized programs. From birthdays and anniversaries to scandals and controversies, every day this column celebrates the soap opera in American culture.

On this date in...

1951: Daytime soap opera Love of Life, created by Roy Winsor, premiered on CBS, three weeks after Search for Tomorrow debuted on the network. Both shows started as 15-minute serials but Love of Life would expand to 30 minutes in 1958, and remain a half hour until its final episode on February 1, 1980. None of the original actors stayed from beginning to end but director Larry Auerbach did. He went on to direct several other New York soaps before retiring the late 1990s. He was among those interviewed by Dustin Hoffman for the soap opera comedy, Tootsie.

The first episode, with approximately six members in the cast, was produced live at Liederkranz Hall in New York City (it later became Studio 54). The show told the story of two sisters, Vanessa Dale Sterling (Peggy McCay, who currently stars as Caroline Brady on Days of our Lives) and Meg Dale Hart (Jean McBride), their family and friends in Rosehill. Sammy Davis Jr. was a vocal Love of Life fan. Some of the biggest stars that game from the show include Warren Beatty, Peter Falk, Jessica Walter, Marsha Mason, Bert Convy and Richard Coogan.

1970: David Henesy aired for the final time as David Collins in the original Dark Shadows. In the 1990 TV movie and 1991 revival series, David Collins was played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. In the unaired 2004 pilot, he was played by Alexander Gould. Gulliver McGrath played the role in the 2012 film adaptation directed by Tim Burton.

1979: On As the World Turns, Doug (Dennis Romer) and Annie Stewart (Julie Ridley) kissed and declared their love for each other. Kim Stewart (Kathryn Hays) decided to move back home. Barbara Ryan (Colleen Zenk) offered to stay with Tom Hughes (Tom Tammi), who took care of Sheila Winston (Martha Lambert) out of guilt.

1980: Paul Keenan debuted as Tod Chandler in Days of our Lives, a role he would play for just over a year. Keenan died in 1986 at age 31.

1981: On General Hospital, Alan Quartermaine (Stuart Damon) asked Susan Moore (Gail Ramsey) to marry him.

1984: On Days of our Lives, Bo Brady (Peter Reckell) survived the explosion caused by Max Hathaway's (Tom Hallick) men, who were trying to get their hands on the prism.

1984: Actor Neil Hamilton, who played Philip Mercer on General Hospital, died at age 85.

1985: On Days of our Lives, Brother Francis (Brian Matthews) rescued Hope Brady (Kristian Alfonso) while Richard Cates (Rod Arrants) was determined to find her.

1986: On Another World, Matthew Cory (Daniel Dale) got acquainted with his biological father, Mitch Blake (William Gray Espy).

1987: On the Season 9 premiere of Knots Landing, five weeks had passed since anyone had seen Ben. Meanwhile, the crack in the cement at the Lotus Point playground got worse. Abby (Donna Mills) just wanted it patched, but Gary (Ted Shackelford) and Karen (Michele Lee) out voted her. The workmen removed the cement and found Peter's body. The show also debuted the painting version of its opening by Sandy Dvore, who also drew the opening sketches for The Young and the Restless in its first 15 years as well as the Y&R logo that came after them.

1992: On Santa Barbara, Sawyer Walker (Eric Close) tried to get Mr. Watkins to book him in some boxing matches. Watkins asked Sawyer to take off his shirt, then was unimpressed by the light middle weight. To convince him he was worthy, Sawyer punched him.

2002: On Guiding Light, Cassie Winslow (Laura Wright) enlisted her friends' help in getting the Beacon Hotel ready for the arrival of a Baroness.

2008: Irene Dailey, best known for her Emmy-winning portrayal of Aunt Liz Matthews on Another World, died at age 88. Prior to AW, she starred as Pamela Stewart on The Edge of Night. At 8, Dailey was dancing in vaudeville, and at 18 she was working in summer stock. With consistent "bad luck," she kept winning parts in what she once said were 13 of Broadway’s worst shows. “Miss Lonelyhearts,” for example, had a nine-day run.
